Default Officials believe replacing paper sentence sheets can prevent inmates

Officials believe replacing paper sentence sheets can prevent inmates from serving extra time

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - "Lawmakers and other agencies met to discuss what solutions are out there to prevent inmates at SCDC from spending time behind bars longer than they have to.

According to members of the South Carolina House Legislative Oversight Committee, a report showed that since 2014, at least 40 S.C. Department of Corrections inmates were held past their release dates. This resulted in SCDC holding inmates at least 7,549 additional days.

"It should never happen and we're doing everything we can to make sure it doesn't happen," S.C. Department of Corrections Director Bryan Stirling said.

Lawmakers said these inadvertent errors cost South Carolinians almost half a million dollars. Director Stirling said when they were made aware of these errors they took action."

Isn't it funny how the only time that the prison system takes action for anything is when they lose money. Why can't they just follow their own rules and just allow inmates to leave after their set incarceration time.

This has nothing to do with money. This has to do with an outdated system that has lead to more problems that aren't being addressed.

And if they were arrested for false imprisonment, and kidnapping, it might put an end to this *cough* "oversight."

The system might have been outdated but really if the SC jail system wanted to, all they had to do at the time when an inmate presented their papers for incarceration and if such paperwork was not illegible. Then all that the clerk had to do was to call the court house for confirmation of the sentence. I mean really how hard would that be? Would that not have saved a lot of inmates doing more time than they needed to do?

I wish it were that simple.
