Default Books being rejected. I tried Amazon and Barnes & Noble

I've been trying to send some books into my boyfriend. They keep being rejected. I tried amazon and barnes and noble. He is in northern state prison, does anyone have a clue what store they will accept from?

In looking at Statutes, it seems both Amazon & B&N would be acceptable:

§ 10A:18-4.2 Limitation on source of publications

(a) Inmates in general population shall be permitted to receive hardcover books, paperback books, magazines and other softcover publications from an authorized source of sale only, such as, but not limited to, the publisher, a book club or a bookstore.
(b) Inmates shall be permitted to receive newspapers only by subscription mailed directly from the publisher.
(c) There shall be no restriction on the number of publications an inmate in general population may receive.
(d) All books, magazines, publications and newspapers must be prepaid.
(e) Limitations regarding publications for inmates confined in close custody units shall be set forth in the unit internal management procedures.

N.J.A.C. 10A:18-4.2

Are you sure you're addressing it properly?

Hopefully someone has had this issue with NJ DOC and can advise.

To send books to my Dad and have all the characters show up on the "to" line, I had to fill it in as follows

First name: John Doe
Last Name: 12345678

Where the number was their inmate number. Most of the online fields for "last name" don't allow enough characters to fit a last name AND and inmate number.

Here's hoping that this is the reason they keep getting rejected, as this is an easy thing to fix.

I didn't see anything in Patchouli's post about it having to be sent by USPS. For a while, some states didn't have the ability to accept things from FedEx or UPS, which makes buying online a bear.

You might want to check and be sure they are not coming from a third party. Ensure they are sold AND shipped by Amazon. I know that can be an issue sometimes.

You might also want to try Powells.com (Powells City of Books - largest used book seller in the world - literally). Their shipping boxes very clearly and in large print say "Powells City of BOOKS" on the outside. And their used book selection is pretty darned impressive.

I suggest this because they only ship by USPS - no FedEx or UPS shipping. And if you buy more than $50 in books, the shipping is free. Slow, but free.

Maybe they won't accept certain types of books (role playing for example)
I use Amazon mostly and always add gift certificate (free) Also, no 3rd party
books will be accepted - only those shipped and sold by Amazon if using that site. Absolutely make sure the prisoner's number is on address
