My son began a 42 year term in January. He has to serve a minimum of 28 yars if all goes well. I don't think I will be around that long and that thought is killing me. I will be 65 next month and I am losing a lot. Even if I do survive that long, what kind of shape will I be in?

Its the first time for Jason too. He spent a year and a half in county and went on to prison in January. Up until then the most he ever had on his record was a traffic ticket ten years ago. I don't know if its scarier for him or for me.

Thank you for responding.. how old is your son?
How are you handling it? I'm very scared for him. He called me only once and it was literally like for 3 min. He went in on Thurs. How long does your son have? My son got 1-3 years, and had 7 1/2 montgs in county, already. My son said he could be out, earliest Nov 12 2017?

Jason got into something really serious and I really do believe that his court appointed attorney was working with the prosecutor and not for Jason. What really happened never came out in court and because of that the judge believed the worst. He sentenced Jason to 42 years which is the maximum sentence possible. He is in prison with guys that are serving 6 to 20 years for the same crime. He is trying to appeal the sentence but I don't hold out much hope. He turned 42 about a month ago. With a 42 year sentence he has to serve at least 28 in prison and the rest on parole. In 28 years I will be 87 years old. I have to try to hold on that long, but I come from a family with a lot of cancer and alzheimers, so I don't feel like I have much of a chance. I am lucky that he can call me every day. But if a day goes by and I don't hear from him I panic. That happened two weeks ago. I found out that he had been targeted by a gang and there was a fight that sent him to the hospital for several stitches and now he is serving 20 days in the hole. At least there I know he is safe. I am very fearful of what will happen when he comes back to the general population though.

Oh my!!! So,so sorry.....
I truly hopes your son gets to appeal his sentence, and gets s shorter sentence.. I have lost trust in the judicial system. I guess my son was correct when he said the system looks to convict, to make #'s......
He needs help, with Addiction, not jail/ prison.
I don't know how committed my son is to recovery , but being in prison, I feel is not going to do him justice. Hope I'm wrong, but am so confused....just in a lot of pain, emotionally..been on this rollercoaster for over 10 years,now... And I too ,have cancer and Alzheimer's in my family too...
This surely is not an easy road....or life
