Default Bro-n-law says he doesn't have shoes, asking for Paypal card

So my brother-n-law is doing a year in Silverdale Detention center in Chattanooga, TN. He's been locked up off and on for 10 years. This time he's harassing my wife claiming that he only has a pair of flip flops to wear and his feet are freezing. He said if we Western Union money to the facility that he will never see it because they seize that money to cover his court fees. He's asking my wife to get a $40 Paypal card and give him the numbers off it so he can trade it for a pair of Nike's from another inmate. This screams BS to me and I think he's probably using the money for drugs. Is it possible he's really only given a pair of flip flops to wear or do all inmates receive shoes?

It does not sound right, thats for sure.
In my state you CAN order shoes from vendors and have them sent.
Not sure about TN.
When my hub was in he did ask for tennis shoes so he could walk the track when they let them outside. but we are also in CA so its not as cold.
I would not send him a paypal card.
Sounds a little fishy to me.

As I understand it, having access to paypal is against DOC policy. I'm not familiar with TN, but I'm sure they are issued a pair standard prison boots, at least they are here in Ky.

FYI: There are as many drugs in prison as there is out here.

First, I highly doubt the facility does not provide shoes beyond shower shoes. Even if they're the canvas slip-ons, they get shoes and socks. If your wife feels compelled to provide shoes, they can be ordered through a package company such as Union Direct. No money need go to his books or to his hands. Drugs or no drugs, what he's asking you to do is illegal.

Its true that they only get 1 pair of shower shoes n one pair of shoes n if u owe the court they will keep 60 percent of what u send .they dont care if ur need shoes or shower shoes. My hubby shoes had holes n taped n they wont give u another pair at least at where my fiance was at ..until he was able to receive his 1st package ,he also bought some boots from guy in there

In fl she got a pair of crocs to wear and that is it unless the job called for bbots then would get those if they had your size available. They did nto since she wore small size, I was able to order a pair of tennis shoes and workboots though a package. giving a paypal number is illegal, everything can be bought direct. I wouldnt do it

Also wanted to add that in CA if you send money to an inmate they do take out SOME of the money for restitution but not all of it. In CA its 55% of whatever money you send. Unless his restitution is paid off in full they will do that every time money is sent.
This is why I almost never sent money and would order things for him thru the vendors.

Every facility is different on what they give their inmates, but it is highly doubtful that all they gave him was a pair of shower shoes. Him asking for a pay pal card sends up lots of red flags and can get you in trouble, it's illegal. If that card is used to pay for something that aids in illegal activities and can be traced back to you or your wife you risk facing the consequences of whatever that money was used for. Depending on how the facility is set up shoes may be ordered through a vendor and shipped to him, if that option is not available the shoes can be purchased through the commissary. There is a possibility that a percentage of money can be deducted from what is put on the inmates account and that amount depends on the facility. If your wife is really concerned about his cold feet only having shower shoes she should call the facility and ask them how he can get a new pair of shoes and if it can be done through a vendor she can get that information and send him the shoes.
