Default Going to halfway house this month, is it too late to send Dress Out Package

My loved one has an out date in January 2018 but he is leaving this month for a half way house. Does anyone know if it is already too late to send him a package with clothes for when he is released and do they transport him right from the prison to the halfway house or does he need his own transportation?

Thanks, any info would be helpful..

Release clothing is handled by the inmate's bop unit team, so he has to ask them if you are still able to send them. They will have to be mailed to his prison counselor. If not, the prison will give him something to wear.

He will be transported to the HWH, by the cheapest method available, chosen by his case manager, which usually means a bus ticket. If he wants to travel a different way, then you/he will have to pay the entire cost.

Default Transportation

That's where we are lucky, he happens to be serving his time about 10 miles from home and the half way house is about 50 miles from home. So in this case, do you know if I am allowed to just pick him up and drive him to the half way house? It's only about a 45 minute drive from the prison.

Thank You So Much, You Have Been Very Helpful

Yes you can pick him up. but only if his case manager approves it and writes it into his unescorted furlough instructions, so he needs to discuss it with his unit team. If it is approved, you will probably be asked to show a current DL, current registration and auto insurance at the prison too

For a HWH that close they might just load him the prison van and drive him instead of a bus. I know Sandstone just drives guys to Minneapolis if that’s where they are going, or if they are catching a bus from there.

If you make arrangements to pick him up, you can just bring his clothes with you and save yourself the cost of shipping.

Good luck!

I agree with the above posts but will add the person doing the furlough in private vehicle will need to be on the approved visitation list. I think we had to request this about 30 days out because all the paperwork. Don't get caught picking him up at the bus station because some HWH will verify how your SO arrives and starting out that way can violate him right off the bat.
