Default Inmate murdered at the Connally Unit

An Inmate at the Connally unit in Kenedy Texas was murdered this past week. The Inmate was beaten to death in the pod. The Inmate was beaten to death by some of his friends!! Where in the hell were the freaking guards??? Well I guess we all know the answer to that don't we???

Anyway I was wondering if anyone has heard anything about this on the news or in the newspapers? Please let me know because several people are very concern about this.

Regards,
~~Linda

Seriously, where are the CO's? LawDawg? Where are you now? Got any answers for us? If the CO's are doing their duty this wouldn't have happened. Don't say they couldn't respond fast enough, if it was inmate on CO, you damn well, they would have been there in a flash. This is so freaking crazy that the CO's get away with this $*it. Blame it on the guy who is dead, that way there is no one responsible. Tell that to the inmates parents and or loved ones. This just bothers the hell out of me. Now lets listen to all of the excuses that will come out of there for how it happened. Yeah, it's so believeable that they "didn't see it", "everything was fine a minute ago", "we couldn't get the doors open", "they had it jammed", yeah right!!! "It's JUST an inmate why all the fuss" "he probably deserved it" and on and on it goes. What does it take????

Most guards do not care and just look the other way. They do not stop a fight, they wait until it is over with than they rack them up. Found out that the unit is on lock down. Wonder Why???

Surely someone has more info on this story??? It is unbelievable and so scarey that these guys are not protected and have to worry about live or death. Good grief!

With the minimum of information here, it is difficult to say whether this is an issue of staff neglect, staffing issues or something that was beyond what staff could control.

Staffing plans approved by the court in Ruiz never did provide a significant number of security personnel in the buildings on a 2250 (the type of construction that Connally happens to be). That handful of officers (seems to me it was 9 CO's and a Sgt. in each building plus the control pod officer, but I would have to pull an old compliance manual to confirm that recollection) cannot be everywhere in a building. Inmates that are going to engage in a beatdown keep up with where staff are at any given time.

Depending on the specifics of a situation, security personnel may see what is going on, but cannot rush blindly into the situation. There have been incidents in the past where an assault between inmates was staged in order to assault security staff. As such, procedure is generally to ensure sufficient personnel to go in safely (and yes, that has held true in cases of staff assaults as well). Not all personnel are trained to administer chemical agents, so it isn't as though an officer can grab a stick, riot shield and a can of agent and go in.

Factor in that if someone if assaulted in their cell, there is not always something that would allow for suspicions to be raised.

And, FWIW, this is one of the reasons that many old-school security staff do not like the shopping mall open-concept construction that the agency went to in the late 1980's. There is simply too much open area to properly manage with the staffing ratios approved by the Court.

From what I understand the unit is on lockdown because of Gangs - I do know for sure that there was an inmate stabbed in the eye - but I have not heard of anything else.... nothing about a man beaten to death....

Keep us posted - I have several friends that have husbands/boyfriends on the unit....

Here is an update from the prisoner who wrote to his mom about this in his letter...

"this is what my son said in his letter..he made it brief or i am
sure it would not have got out..." Some friends of mine beat
another friend of mine to death the other day.See if you can find out anything aboutt this from jailbirdsings or anywhere else on the internet. They done it on the pod next to mine.Dont worry about me i am fine ". those are his exact words. I can tell yo that he is not in ag seg...he's in general population and his pod is on the third floor. I have no idea if this was gang related...my son is not a member of any gangs."

Still have not heard anything else about this in any newspapers.

I just printed out this thread to send to my son but I am thinking now that they won't give it to him anyway. And will it start something at his Unit? So I just threw it away. Stay quiet. Don't rock the boat.

Goose I'm here, been remodeling for a while so the pooter was in the closet. I wasn't there, I couldn't tell ya why, who, or what for. An inexperianced officer will run into the fight. They will end up getting hurt. It is best to allow time for help to arrive to stop it to reduce injuries for everyone involved. We now have COP which is basiclly pepper spray that all uniformed staff carry. Under severe circumstances it is allowed to be used, this was one of them. As Lyn pointed out all units are understafed. It may not show it on books as much as it used to because the agency has "reevaluated" staffing to make it look better. Where you used to have 50 officers on a shift (or was supposed to) the agency now says 35 will cover it. More "feel good, do nothing" bullshit. A man can die in one stroke of a knife, how long does that take? Have you ever had a wreck? Was it because you didn't pay enough attention? We are all human, Co's, inmates, and there loved ones, EVERYONE makes mistakes. One final note- I respect you, you are not the inmate, you did nothing wrong, respect me, I just need a job. I do my job to the best of my ability. Some don't, I do. I pay taxes, I get paid by taxes, I expect my moneys worth.

I don't think so. My hubby told me at visitation that they were only allowed to send mail once a week, he never did say whether he got mail regularly or not. But I really don't know for sure.

well bad news guys an inmate was killed but Connally is being secretive. My husband did not know till this weekend and did not want me to know but, I found out. They are still on lockdown but are beggining progressive schedules so we are hoping they will be off of lockdown by Thanksgiving. BUT lets oray for the inmates family. I dont know why they are being so secretive but bit is a bad situation I continue to pray for my husband and all other inmates.

by the way jailbird sorry for doubting you, its just sometimes things get said especially, in the Connally unit so we wanted to make sure it is all correct because they are so many people involved all we can do is to pray for all of our loved ones. I know I worry about my husband all the time, keep us in your prayers you guys are always in mine.

It is the cover-ups that really upset me. I have seen so much of this that it makes me sick!!! How can TDCJ continue to get away with this. Mcmullin, I will keep your husband and others in my prayers.

I have not heard anything about a death at this unit of an inmate or a CO. I do not believe that a death would occur at this particular unit that could possibly be kept quiet. This unit has had too much publicity in the past. Something of this significance would get out somehow.
