Default One confirmed case of active TB at Snake River

News Release from: Oregon Dept. of Corrections
Posted: June 13th, 2011 3:15 PM

One Confirmed Case of Tuberculosis at Snake River Correctional Institution

Department of Corrections (DOC) Health Services staff have confirmed one inmate has an active case of tuberculosis at Snake River Correctional Institution (SRCI) in Ontario, Oregon. Tuberculosis is a serious infection of the lungs. While serious, TB can be readily diagnosed and successfully treated.

The inmate has been isolated and is undergoing treatment. He will continue to be tested and treated until he is no longer contagious.

The institution is carefully monitoring the situation in order to contain any potential outbreak, and educating staff about tuberculosis signs, symptoms and the importance of being tested.

DOC, in partnership with Malheur County Health Department and the Oregon Health Authority and the has begun testing staff and inmates who may have come into contact with this inmate.

For those staff that have not been identified as close contacts, but still wish to be tested, arrangements are being made to host a tuberculosis clinic at the facility. The time and date of this clinic are still being coordinated to ensure adequate staffing to provide patient evaluations.

All inmates are screened for tuberculosis when they first come to DOC custody. They are then screened every year during their incarceration.

SRCI is DOC's largest male institution and today's population is 3,042 inmates.

My husband has been waiting for a couple of weeks to transfer from TRCI to Snake River to his new job at the call center. Wonder if this has caused a delay because he thought he would have moved by now. I keep not sending him mail cuz we aren't sure when he will move.
