Published: Thursday, July 19, 2007

Rather than face federal bribery charges, the former food buyer for Oregon's prison system has become a fugitive.

Four days after meeting with federal prosecutors to discuss a potential plea deal, Farhad "Fred" Monem, 48, took a flight to Buffalo, N.Y., and did not return as planned on July 11, Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Cardani said in federal court in Eugene on Wednesday.

Monem's wife, Karen Monem, was arrested Wednesday at her job in Salem on a single charge of conspiring to solicit and to receive bribes.
Court documents show investigators believe the couple took more than $1 million in bribes and kickbacks from at least two national wholesalers of large volumes of overstocked and discounted foods. Four officials of those two companies have pleaded guilty to federal charges of bribery and tax fraud...

Fred Monem is a native of Iran who immigrated in 1979. He was publicly recognized for bringing down the cost of prison meals before the bribery allegations came to light in January. He was a state employee for more than 10 years before being fired in February from his position

That boy is long gone. Probably crossed into Canada at the Buffalo border and took a flight back to his homeland. She probably wont be far behind. Ankle bracelets dont set off Metal detectors.

How disgusting it is. One whole state than can not keep track of the goings on with the food in their prisions. Sad part is the food in the state will be as bad or worse and cost the system more money now. How disgusting he leaves his wife out to dry as well.

There were those hoping, I think, that when arrested, he might provide info on others... Just read an article today where an FCI food service manager was bragging about only spending $2.00 per day per inmate for meals.
