My son just got to his Home prison today also, FMC Springfield, I have called, they said he has to get a PAC number issued first, they said about 24 hours, and he has to have money on his Federal Acct. for phone calls. I already ordered him a book, and sent him a card and a letter, he can have those anytime

To use the inmate telephone system, they need to give a list of every phone number they want to call to their counselor, who enters them into the ITS computer. The time that takes depends on the counselor's availability, and when they input the phone numbers, so it can be quick, or not so quick. Then the inmate(s) have to wait to receive their 9 digit phone pin # in the mail (it will not change even if they are transferred).

Then they can use the phone & their pin to transfer money from their inmate commissary account to their ITS phone account to purchase prepaid phone minutes, or they can call you collect (your phone must be able to accept collect calls). Phone rates are 6 cents/min for local calls to the prison, all other US calls cost 21 cents/min and collect calls cost the recipient 25 cents/min with no other charges added. Corrlinks email costs the inmate 5 cents/min whenever they are logged in to either write or read messages.

If you get a local phone number, be sure it is not a "call forwarding" service like Google voice. Call forwarding is forbidden by the bop.

They get up to 300 phone minutes/month with no carryover of unused minutes (400 in Nov & Dec.). If their prepaid ITS account hits zero during a call, it will be hung up. Phone minutes and monthly commissary spending limits refresh to the next period on the same day each month. The 5th number in their bop ID (xxxxX--xxx) times 3, plus one, so if their number is 7, they will get new limits on the 22nd of each month.

In minimum security camps you can send paperback books directly from home. Hardbacks must arrive in the US Mail from the publisher or from a bookstore. To find the correct inmate mailing address (name and bop ID number must be on the top line) go to the bop web page for that prison.

Some temporary stops allow phone access, others don't, so they may or may not be able to call you when they are in transit. If the temporary stops set him up on the regular bop inmate telephone service, like usually happens in a federal detention center, they will have the same phone rules as in their home prison.

His regular counselor at his designated prison will be able to import his call list from the FDC, which usually speeds up his ability to call you from there. Every time I was transferred, I did receive 300 new phone minutes as soon as I was activated on that prison's ITS computer.

My sons plight is rather confusing, he was sent to SeaTac for his mental evaluation, they found him incompetent to enter a plea, so he was sent to FMC Springfield for restoration, whether or not he can be restored is a question, he has schizophrenia, so he will be in Springfield until they can make that decision. The Judge said he wanted an update report in 4 months, so hes not in transit anymore.

He should have regular phone access there, at least I did at FMC Butner. If you don't hear from him, be sure to write frequent letters.
