Dress code for ceremony: pretty much same as visitation...no dress above the knee; no tight clothing (i.e no tights, no skinny jeans, etc); no halter tops or tank tops; no low cut shirts/blouses; no slits in the skirt/dress. We can have a white dress, but it cannot have gems/rhinestones/crystals/etc on it.

I asked to clarify about the rings...he said he's pretty sure you will be able to bring a ring for your husband...but if they try to deny it, that he will fight for that because the ring is important in a wedding ceremony as it is "symbolic of the covenant between the spouses."

He doesn't think we'll be permitted to write our own vows because he thinks that there will be a number of couples doing the ceremony at the same time, and that the vows will be generic because, obviously, not everyone is Christian.

He said the total cost for the marriage will be $200 ($150 of the officiant and $50 for the license).

I asked how far along they are with the wedding packet for the first guy, and he said that they will be sending of his packet to Cali, hopefully, this week. Once they get it approved by Cali, they will begin to accept packets from other inmates. He said the first set of weddings could take place in July or August.
Have you heard anything else lately? Just curious if there's been any change.

No, I was waiting to talk to m'love yesterday to ask if the Chaplain came to see him yet....but, I was camping and it would figure I wouldn't have service, so I missed his call anyways. I will try to call the Chaplain tomorrow to see if I can get any updates.

I did call today, but the Chaplain wasn't in today. They said he would be in tomorrow and that to try to call around 1pm....so that's what I will try to do.

I spoke to the Chaplain today. He said they JUST sent the marriage packet to California. He said he knows it seems like they are being slow about it, but he said that there is a lot of small details they are trying to iron out, this being the first marriage they are doing at the facility, and so they want to make sure everything is correct. He said as soon as they get word from California, he will go speak to m'love and the other inmates, to get the ball rolling for us and other couples.

Ha, I told him "I'm sorry if I'm such a bother," and he replied "No, you're not a bother at all. I don't mind talking to you, you're always polite and I know you just really want to make sure that this marriage occurs. Sometimes I wonder about a persons commitment to a marriage, but I have no doubt with you, I can tell you are seriously committed to this. If you have any questions, call anytime." LOL.

When he first got on the phone, he asked me if I was in KS yet. Haha, can you tell I've called a few times?! LOL.

Exclamation Marriage Packet Info!

Well everyone, I got the marriage packet from m'love last week. I WAS going to scan the pages and upload them here so you could see what all they ask for, etc....but forgot. I was in such a hurry to get them back to m'love! D'oh!

Anyways...there are a LOT of papers in the packet. There are four forms with pretty much identical questions...two that are filled out by the inmate and two that are filled out by the fiance. The info they ask for on all 4 forms is:

Inmate name, CDC # (of course), fiance's name and address, number of marriages (for both), when were they divorced or when did the spouse die (if previously married), number/names/ages of children (for both the inmate and the fiance), how long have you known each other, have you lived together, what was the crime the inmate was convicted of (not just the penal codes, they want it spelled out in writing), how long is the inmate's sentence, signature and date.....and I think that is it.

They also have a few other forms for us to read (i.e. info on dress code; marriage process, etc). There is some other stuff that is for the prison to fill out (to mark their approval or denial) also. Then, the inmate and fiance each have to write a letter to the Warden requesting permission to marry. The following info MUST be included in EACH letter:

* How did you meet?
* How long have you known each other?
* Give names/ages of all children involved- together and with other people.
* How long is the inmate's prison term?
* How long has the inmate been incarcerated?
* What was the crime? In your own words (not the codes).
* That you love each other and how you foresee the future together.

(I posted the letter I wrote in my blog here on PTO, for anyone that is interested in reading it).

Also, when you first read through the papers, there is a page that says "Wedding ceremonies are not to be scheduled sooner than 21 days after the inmate signs the marriage license." This had me concerned because I was afraid I would have to travel down to OK twice in one month (the first time to sign the marriage license myself, and then again 21 days later for the ceremony)! BUT...I talked to Chaplain Michaelson (I really like him, too bad he is leaving this month), and he assured me that form is a CDC form that has to be included but does not apply to NFCF; he said that the wedding will take place the same day that I go down to pay for and sign the marriage license. Here's how it works, according to him, I will go down to the courthouse that morning (Jan 25th), with my ID and a copy of m'loves ID (has to include the birth date on it, so that means I need to try to get his birth certificate), sign and pay for the marriage license. That afternoon, the court clerk will take the license to the prison to get m'loves signature, then we will get married that afternoon.

NOTE...a copy of the inmate's prison ID is NOT enough for the marriage license; it HAS TO BE AN ID WITH BIRTH DATE on it!!

Hope y'all find this helpful!

Thanks for your help!!!
In the state of Oklahoma, a prisoner can be married by a Justice of the Peace, however, an OK JP will not step foot into NFCF because they are CA inmates. He'd have to be back in CA for you to get married. I know because I used to work there.

Actually, they have recently changed the rules. If you look at my most recent post, right above yours, you will see the steps involved in getting married in NFCF now. I went to see m'love this past weekend and he said our marriage packet has since been sent off to Cali and we are awaiting their approval. Once that's done, it's gotta be approved by the Warden. Hopefully, it will all be approved...and if so, we will be getting married on Jan 25th.

Congrats!! I also sent my packet in back in the end of August. I called the Chaplain last week and he hadn't heard from Cali yet on our marriage packet...so, hopefully soon.

I called the Chaplain again today to see if they have heard anything back from Cali yet, regarding my marriage packet. He said they have not heard anything yet, and that as soon as they do, he would let m'love know. I asked him if he knew who I could call in Cali to find out what is taking so long...he said he has no idea, that he doesn't even know where the paperwork gets sent to. He is not much help.

So, do any of you ladies know who I might need to contact in Cali? Thanks!!!

You could try contacting COCF @ 916/464-4001 and/or Ombudsman office @ 916/445-1773, but they might refer you to COCF because your LO's out of state. Ombudsman's should be able to tell you the process on CDCR end. Good luck!

Ty JCs for giving me the suggestion to call COCF. I called them the day after you suggested, and left a message...then called again a few days later...finally, they told me to call CC1 Harris, so I did and left a message for him. He finally called me back today (he as out of the office for 2 weeks he said), and he said he has my packet and they will work on getting it processed. He did say this is the first out-of-state packet he has done. So, hopefully, this will get the ball rolling...we'll see. I will keep y'all posted.

Hey HesMyForever,

Good luck. When I talked to the chaplain at NFCF he was very dicouraging and he seemed lazy. he told me to go to Texas so I opted to do that on Nov. 30 I'm excited about it. i ordered our rings already and I got them today but I had to send them off for engraving.Do you have any idea of how i'm supposed to give him his ring? I know some of them have rings but when I called NFCF staff had no clue what to do.They are brainless ppl.

Keep us posted in your marriage i'm excited for you and I'm interested about how the process goes.

Oh, I know the Chaplain at NFCF does not know what he is doing, and doesn't care to know his job, and does seem to be very lazy to me as well...he tried to convince me to go to TX as well, but I refuse. I politely told him that since they have a process in place for inmates to marry at the facility, that is how I want to do it. Besides, OK is closer to me than TX.

As for the ring, there was another lady who did a proxy marriage and she was told she was NOT allowed to bring the ring into the facility for him; from my understanding you'd have to order him one through the package. Chaplain Michaelson (the previous Chaplain) did say that I could bring rings in for us to exchange...buuuuut since he is no longer there, I'm not sure if that will still fly. We'll see what happens.

I'm happy that worked out for you. It seems like the only way to get a straight answer at times, when getting the NFCF run around, is to call them. Glad you stuck to your guns with the chaplain so you can have your wedding there. His behavior sure doesn't sound very appropriate for a man of the cloth...just shameful.

I am the woman HMF remembers who went through the wedding band craziness at North Fork. They WILL NOT allow you to bring them in or send them in, they cannot be engraved, they can only come in through package vendors in a quarterly package. I fought this for weeks all the way to the top so I speak from experience. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Smile Marriage Proxy for NFCF in Sayre Info..

Help!!!!! I've read a couple of post in reference to how to get a married via proxy however I still have some questions if anyone can walk me thru it. From what I have read so far it has to happen in Texas so which city is closest to Sayre, Oklahoma? The next thing is I know about the form to download and send for him to sign. How much is it going to cost & does someone stand in or them or what...

Thank you

Hi 24kCali,

I am actually getting married by proxy in TX on Nov. 30th. Yes Texas is the place to go but as to where in TX is up to you. I'm going to Fort Worth, TX (Tarrany County) and thats about 4.5 hours from Sayre so what my plan is is that i'm going to drive to Fort Worth and get there Friday and then drive to Sayre when i'm done there and visit Saturday and Sunday.

As for the actual marriage by proxy process. Of course he needs to get the document notarized. There is a notary at NFCF and they didn't charge anything. On the form there is a space for you to put the name of the person who will stand in for him when you get married and they must go with you to TX and actually stand in for him. When you get to texas you will go get your marriage license which is about $71 and then you have to wait 72 hours to actually get married. Then you must find a Justice of the Peace to perform the actual marriage. The one I found is about $80. You make an appointment and go and let them marry you. The Justice of the Peace can take the document back to the recorder or they can give it to you to take back. But after that you are married.

(FYI, this 72 hour waiting period can get waived but you must get a form from the recorder and take it to the court and have a judge sign to waive the 72 hour waiting period. I asked and the lady told me they do it all the time so its possible to get it done).

Inbox me of you have specific questions u need answers.....Hope this helps

How much is it going to cost & does someone stand in or them or what...

Thank you
Please read this thread from the beginning and you will see many answers to your questions. One thing to keep in mind is that different counties in Texas require different documents for proxy. Some will not do it at all, some are very hard, some are prison friendly. I chose Collin County for that reason and you can see info on my experience earlier in this thread as well. Good luck to you!

I cannot stress enough that you MUST call in advance and make appointments with these people. Timeframe was difficult for me to work with but the people are very nice and helpful.
