Default Has anyone not gotten approved because of past criminal history?

I got a live scan done to send along with the visiting form because I could not remember all the times I have ever gotten arrested. I have quite a few charges but they have been all over 7 years ago. I wrote a letter to the warden to grant me visits and that I have changed but has anyone not gotten approved because of past criminal history. And if you have been approved with a history what were all the steps taken and things needed to be sent for this to happen

Welcome to Prison Talk. Each prison system makes its own rules about who can visit. In some (federal included) it matters if you are off parole or probation.

If he is locked up in CA, check our CA forums

Getting approved for visitation can be a real finicky process.

In many prisons, there is only one very-overworked visitation officer who is the only one handling all the applications. That's why it can sometimes take weeks (or even months) to get a decision.

In my own experience, I had no problem even with my criminal record getting approved to see two friends of mine, one I had known before he went to prison, the other I had only met a couple years prior inside. The only caveat was I had to wait 6 months after I topped out (off paper) to apply to see the first friend, and another 6 months after my first friend topped out before I could get approved to see the second one.

On the other hand, my brother (who has no criminal record) just got denied trying to visit our cousin who he's known since... forever. The reason given was "no recent ties." (Huh? He's been in prison for these past two years!) He ended up going to the Lieutenant Governor's office of all places and getting them to intervene so that he could get approved. Frustrating.

So yeah, it can definitely be hit or miss, depending on whatever politics or discretion the visitation officer happens to be exercising on a given day.

Good luck though. And keep trying. You know what they say: "The squeaky wheel gets the grease."
