Default Article: Inmates: Racism Cause of Prison Altercation

Associated Press

The American Civil Liberties Union says that violence is increasing at the Wyoming State Penitentiary in Rawlins.

ACLU attorney Steven Pevar says the escalation of violence is ``very concerning.''

He says he's closely following the investigation into an altercation April 20th in which one inmate was sent to the hospital.

In a letter to the Casper Star-Tribune, Christopher Pullie and Darrell Booker identified themselves as two of the five black victims of that attack, which they contend was racially motivated.

The two men allege that the main groups of attackers were Hispanic and American Indian inmates who were joined by white prisoners.

A Corrections Department spokeswoman says a lockdown put into effect in the block where the altercation occurred is still in place.

The Carbon County Sheriff's Department is heading the investigation.
