Default Amazon, Evil?

Fun facts:

- Amazon and its owner Jeff Bezos are now officially the richest company/person in the history of the world, ever.

- Meanwhile the majority of their workforce receive poverty level wages and have to rely on food stamps to feed their families.

- Workers are forbidden from unionizing and will be fired immediately for organizing.

- Workers are routinely fired if they do not return to work quickly after pregnancy, severe illness, or major surgeries.

- Amazon decided it was in the economic advantage to NOT install air conditioning in their warehouses, but instead hires private ambulances to sit outside their facilities 24/7 to take workers to the hospital when they pass out from heat exhaustion.

- Amazon truck drivers are forced to work such strict schedules and delivery timetables that its common for them to wear adult diapers all day while on shift and not take breaks.

- They charge different customers different prices for the same products based on profiling and data collection. For example, a depressed 30-ish female customer will be charged more for chocolates and cat books than a 60 y.o. dude with a high credit rating.

- On average, for every one million dollars in sales, Amazon employs one person, while independent retailers employ eight people.

- They open many of their distribution centers in communities with high levels of poverty, not to stimulate those communities, but because they know they will have an endless supply of workers who will accept low wages.

- They have created a workplace environment where any customer complaint is presumed to mean an employee has made a mistake, or an employee is ultimately somehow at fault. It is common for complaints to result in a person being fired and replaced.

Okay....do you have any proof of any of this or is it all hearsay? Furthermore...their employees are not "forced" to do anything at all. They do not have to work for Amazon, they could find employment elsewhere. Many companies pay minimum wage so the "poverty level wages" is BS in my opinion, the employees are not slaves, they could seek employment elsewhere. Just like Walmart/fast food/retail/grocery baggers etc...

Then don't shop Amazon. Or any other company that you've fully investigated and find their practices to be distasteful.

My son works there. Makes $22/hour, part time. I’d say it’s a pretty good start for a swing shift. Loves it. He doesn’t work in the warehouse though, he works in transportation.

Uhhh... yeah, this is pretty much BS. I know at least a dozen people who work at the warehouse in Aurora (which is absolutely NOT an area of poverty) and they all love it. The majority of the ones I know are stay-at-home moms whose children have grown up enough to start school so they are working part time during the day while the kids are in school. They are working voluntarily and would never go to work at a place that treated them poorly.

Being a rich man doesn't make you inherently "evil", BTW.

Well, if you hadn’t taken all the chocolates and cat books I wouldn’t have had to.

From Consumer Affairs it says, "The practice of charging different customers different prices for the same item is fairly common among online sellers — and perfectly legal in most instances. It's called “dynamic pricing,” and Amazon isn't the only company that does it." (A.1) That being said, it's genius to utilize this to their advantage (cookies and data). Why? Even stores that AREN'T online do it. When a product is in HIGH demand (for example new games, new cars, etc) the prices are in fact higher because they know it's in more demand. I can buy a $10 pair of sunglasses up the street and then buy the EXACT same sunglasses from a name brand store and spend 10x that amount.

"The Amazon CEO's net worth reached $105.1 billion Monday, according to Bloomberg's billionaire tracker. That eclipses the record previously held by Microsoft founder Bill Gates." (A.2) He's made an incredibly HUGE company. He's employed a serious amount of people, he's given opportunity to sellers of ALL types and quite frankly he deserves to profit off off it. If you read the article you'll see that the CEO actually buys a serious amount of stock in his own company... so he's investing in his own company and that's helping him make more money.

As for Amazon being stricken on their truck drivers... from someone who is very familiar with the Semi World/Industry, I'll tell you now that there are SERIOUS laws and regulations to follow. Amazon isn't the only one that has shipping needs. I've heard more people complaining their package was a day late than saying "thank goodness the truck driver got to the destination safely". You'll also find that Amazon actually uses all of the other major shipping companies (fed Ex, UPS, USPS, etc) - so it's obviously not "Amazon" that's the only problem, here.

As for the working conditions inside Amazon Warehouses, this is old news... (A.3) You'll see that they have invested over 52 million dollars to fix "older" warehouses so they are safer and have air-conditioning. You'll also see that this article is from 2012... and it's 2018. Clearly they weren't being very smart and they fixed their tune. But sure, let's hold them accountable FOREVER but expect people to forgive our inmates....?

In 2015 Amazon began offering 20 weeks of paid maternity leave.. (A.4). So.. that was three years ago.

I could keep going but I've spent twenty minutes on this post already lol... So, as you can see... I'd definitely do some research and check dates and facts before posting a bunch of stuff. lol

$33mil of it just went toward a scholarship fund for Dreamers after posting a tweet asking (presumably at least some consumers) for philanthropic suggestions. I'll pay $.75 more for my tinted moisturizer if that's where it's going.

I suspect that is why OP posted this thread in the first place.

Jeff Bezos is well-known for his liberal views and causes he supports, so right-wing trolls have been taking to forums trying to defame Amazon to try to hurt Bezos.

Judging based on OP's choice of screen-name and brief posting history, it's pretty clear they are just here to shit-stir...

Well if sh*t-stirring opens up factual dialogue, then cool. I know part of the Trump-Bezos feud centers around the Washington Post's editorial bias, as well. Dragging the USPS into it was par for the course.

Living in a rural area with limited shopping options, I'll chose Amazon over Walmart any day.

Sanders calls out Amazon after 2-year-old orders Batman toy using Echo

Quote:
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders is calling out Amazon after her two-year-old child was able to use the Echo to purchase an $80 Batman toy.

Sanders used her official White House Twitter account on Sunday to complain that the company’s Echo device allowed her young son to purchase the toy by mistake.

HAHAHA! The Trump Admin is getting desperate trying to defame Amazon any way they can...

The comments underneath that article are priceless as well.

I just tried yelling "impeach impeach impeach" at my Echo and it just made the sound of whiskey over rocks and a long drag on a cigarette before saying, "I'm sorry, I don't yet have that information. My database is expanding every day. Please check back soon."

Um, does she know you can shut it off or require a PIN?

Read the comments below that article.

Either she's lying, or she purposefully set up One-Click ordering on her Echo without requiring a PIN.

I think she's full of it myself. Considering how many Batman items they have for sale there on Amazon, you'd have to go through quite a few specific verbal prompts to be able to order that particular item.

I suspect Trump told her to make up a story, so she did.

My My My... if this "situation" we're in... makes it to the History books.. it won't need it's own chapter... it's going to need it's own book.
I see a "Trump 101" being added to History Class electives in the future. :-/
