Default Packages

Well after 7 years someone I know just got trasfered to Avenal. My husband was here in 2005.

When can I send a package? I used access last time are they still ok? Where do I go for a radio?. Any and all info welcome.

I have always before this past quarter sent my packages via Access and thought they were fine. However, this past quarter there have been (and continue to be) a lot of issues with their website. If you look under the Mail section of the California forums you'll see a couple of threads about the problems.

Because of the problems with Access I sent the quarterly package through Walkenhorst's. I think I will probably stay with Walkenhorst's for future packages. They shipped more quickly and had a UPS number I could track the package with--I was even able to see when it was delivered to the prison and who signed for it. Access' information communication is sparse and there is no tracking number provided.

Make sure he is not on unassigned status or he will not be able to get a package. Usually, when an inmate arrives at a new prison, they are considered unassigned, and cannot receive a package until they have been to classification. This can take a few days or more. Once he has been through classification, he will be able to tell you whether he is clear to receive a package. I personally used to prefer Access, but Walkenhorst's is good too. Access packages used to arrive quickest, but I think it all comes down to personal preference. Hope this helps

Hello all,

Has anyone ordered any language learning CDs from a vendor? My bf wants to learn Portuguese, but haven't found any luck on where to find it! Something similar to that of Rosetta Stone but without the computer program part. Thanks!

from what I understand they can only bring battery operated appliances. I'm not sure on the specs that are allowed. I'll ask my Love when he calls and post the answer later.

I talked to my husband today, and hope this is helpful information. They are in dorms, which are separated into cubicles. Each pod has 5 bunks for 10 men. There are 24 pods in his dorm. He said lots of the guys in there have TV's, fans, etc. plugged in, so appliances are not restricted to battery operated.

I just sent one to my husband using walkenhorst.com. I ordered it last week and he got it yesterday, so they have a pretty quick turn around time.

Does anyone know if there's a way to send money without the prison taking any ? I sent my son 200 $ and the prison took half to pay on his restitution ! I just don't think that was fair , thank you

Unfortunately there isn't. Any money sent to him has to go thru the prison and they will take their half until it's paid off;( I don't send my husband money at all, just his packages and things he can trade like extra books, magazines and greeting cards.
