Default Man Kills Prison Penpal

This is a bit scary!

"An Ohio man has been accused of viciously butchering a woman he wrote to while behind bars, as well as her boyfriend, a month after his release from prison, police said."

He said she wasn't who he thought she was - clearly, he wasn't who she thought he was either!

IKR! That kinda got me too. We'll never know but do you s'pose he got jealous/possessive?

Wonder if this gets enough air-time, if it could possibly cause people to not want to be pen-pals?

I would suggest that he wasn't who she thought he was. Whatever the situation it appears they had been pen pals 10 years and she had picked him up and given him a place to stay.
Certainly a very worrying case.

This reminds me of what I was told years back by a boss of mine.
"Give me ten satisfied customers, and I am happy. But the words of just one dissatisfied customer can outweigh the words of 100 satisfied customers."

This likely will be an issue for the media to distort and destroy the image of the pen-pal network. It won't destroy-destroy it, but it could wield a nasty "black eye" to it.

You have good and bad people everywhere you go.

Who knows what went on. We'll probably never know. They were in debt and there was some prostitution and drug activity at the house and even if no charges were filed something sketchy was going on at the very least. Sadly, even if it was self defense no one will believe him and he'll spend the rest of his life in prison.

Pen paling has zero to do with this except it was how they met. Match.com is dangerous depending on who you meet and they advertise for that on TV!

It SHOULD serve as a reminder to be careful about letting people into your residence when you don't have actual social experience with them...this holds just as true with someone in prison and being released as it does the fool from the bar.

Safer than the fool at the bar as the fool at the bar is likely drunk and doesn't care. Most generally someone fresh out of the Big House really doesn't want to go back.
IMO.

I just wanted to point out that she was incarcerated too when they started penpalling. So these are fellow inmates. It also appears that they were still steeped in crime (given that it was a rundown house known for drugs and prostitution). Obviously none of it's an excuse to commit murder. There's just a few more elements to the story that wouldn't apply to most people's penpal situations.

Anyways I think it's clear that this story has had no impact on writing penpals or its perception, by large - since a couple weeks already passed. I wouldn't have expected it to. I'd never heard this story to be honest - and there are others. Still though, I think it's substantially uncommon considering how many penpal correspondences are going on. Personally, I've never been afraid of any of my penpals.

Not too long ago, I was considering a new penpal. One I could've been interested in was in for a burglary. I always looked them up further and found that he was from the (large) city I'm abt to move to. Apparently he had just gotten out of prison a couple months before the arrest, hooked up with his now adult son, got really drunk, and took him around to rob houses - then introducing the son to a life of prison. Way to go!

I thought abt it and SPECIFICALLY did not choose him because I didn't want him getting out in the same city, running amok, knowing me and having me right there. I don't want to be involved in any of that. And that goes for even the current friends I have in prison right now. No... no... no....

So for me, having them in close proximity upon release is a minus.
