Default FCI Taft, CA may not be closed after all.

According to Bakersfieldnow.com, US Department of Justice may not move forward with closing the Taft Correctional Institution.
"Earlier this month, US Congressman McCarthy met with U.S. Attorney General William Barr to express concerns with the BOP’s decision to deactivate the TCI, effective January 30, 2020".

I wondered why the bop would care how much money it would cost to bring CI Taft up to livable conditions, the reason they quoted for wanting to shut it down (before the politicians intervened), so I looked it up. I found out that CI Taft is owned by the BOP and operated by Management and Training Corporation under contract with the Federal Bureau of Prisons. The best of both worlds for the private prison company.

If the prison did close, the town of Taft would suffer greatly. My wife grew up there, and presently at least 5 of her semi relatives work at the prison. By the way, the town was initially named Moron. California (Google it LOL).

This part has nothing to do with the prison but I'll post it anyway.

The first time I drove into Taft I was greeted by a billboard from the KKK, "Racial slur don't let the sun set on your ass in Taft". The billboard has been gone for many years.

Here's a link to a 1975 article from the Sports Illustrated vault " VIOLENT RETURN TO A TROUBLED PAST" that explains the town's KKK history and it's (then, 1975) present day dealings with the Taft College's decision to recruit black athletes.
