Default Federal Good Time Change Process/Updated: 3,000 released today

My friend called and asked me to check, on the BOP inmate locator page, to see what his release date showed. I did and, as you can guess, there was no change.
The one "bright spot" was the statement, on that page, which read:
"Due to the First Step Act, sentences are being reviewed and recalculated to address pending Good Conduct Time changes. As a result, an inmate's release date may not be up-to-date. Website visitors should continue to check back periodically to see if any changes have occurred."

I'm wondering if anyone has heard, or read, how they are processing the recalculations of all these people? Is it by length in custody? Maybe by register number? I know, when I see his date changed, I will be happier than I have in a long time! Just hoping it won't take too long to see the change!

Thank for any/all insights!

People have heard, even gone to court to get their number reduced. I haven't heard how the BOP is going about making the change only that the law was written inaccurately so it wasn't automatic. (Great job, Jared.) The bop.gov number is not reliable, your friend has to talk to his counselor or go look at his records for the answer. It's only a big issue if he's supposed to be released in the next few months, otherwise he has time to wait out the process. The Federal Public Defender is helping people who are being ignored and having to spend unnecessary time in jail.

The bop is under a deadline to credit the additional (retroactive and future) good time, 54 days a year, written into the First Step Law by Congress for the sole reason to force the bop to finally comply with the law. 54 days of good time, not 47, has been the law for over 35 years in the Truth in Sentencing laws passed in the 1980's, but the bop came up with some voodoo arithmetic by saying that 47 equals 54. Unfortunately the courts allowed them to get away with stealing one week of good time from every eligible prisoner. Congress and the President finally put a stop to it.

Do you know when the deadline, to have this finished, is? I know it doesn't mean anything for those of us who have multiple years. To me, and my friend, it just shows something to look at and be hopeful about.

Sometime this month, July 2019. Here's the American Bar Association Journal's posting of an article by Justin George of The Marshall Project

According to my husband’s councilor, it’s July 19th. They are updating daily. My husband’s release date hasn’t updated either. Fingers crossed it happens soon for all people incarcerated.

At the camp where my husband is they were also told July 19th. A few who are close to release have had their date recalculated already.

More than 3,000 prisoners released under First Step Act

Freedom came Friday [Today!!] for more than 3,000 people. They were released from prisons and halfway houses across the country under the First Step Act signed into law by the president last year.

For non-violent drug offenders like Norah Yahya, the new law is a new beginning, allowing some prisoners like her to be released early.

Default Recalculating Dates

Here it is July 19 & my husband date has not changed. Anyone had any luck? Is the FBOP just taking their time? I thought it would automatically change 🤦🏾*♀️

It’s BOP so it’s gonna change either 11.59 pm tonight or they’ll ask for extension. It just amazes me how the BOP can’t get anything right or done within a timely manner...

I know right, itís so ridiculous. I could not even talk to my husband today because they took their phones and computer privileges today. They need to do their job. They knew 120 days ago that this was going into effect. I guess we will just have to see tomorrow.

One possibility is that is done 24 hours before a release from prison. I hope that's why!

I checked my husband and they added 6 months as of yesterday any ideas why they would add and not subtract he’s at a camp (white collar) no incidences or anything he’s a model prisoner doing everything he can to earn good time . clerical error?
I just spoke with him and he will check with his counselor who he says is a really good guy

Hi everyone, new to PrisonTalk. So this was brought to me by my fiance' who's incarcerated in FCI Morgantown. I checked on Friday the 19th and nothing was there, but I checked again Saturday the 20th and there was a change. Only a total of 55-56 days. His release date was 12/30/21, it now says 11/04/21. Was hoping for a larger decrease in time since he has been incarcerated since 2014, but we are truly thankful to one day closer to him coming home. Thanks for posting.

I read that many of the released inmates were handed over to ICE for deportation, or to other agencies that had filed detainers with the bop. Even so, it is still one step closer to the end.

I read somewhere that there were approx 650 (?), maybe it was 750 that would be handed over to ICE for deportation. Don't remember where I read it
