Good luck FL DOC. I am glad I am not in there anymore. Watch, now that the canteen is going to lose about $10 million a year in sales...that cut will affect all the inmates. Even worse quality food and all of that garbage. I am not really sure why the FL DOC decided to do this. And the FL DOC is stupid to think they are "giving inmates six months" to stop smoking. People can't even quit on the outside. Bring the rain FL DOC! You morons in Tallahassee are causing your own problems now. I used to kind of defend you FL DOC...not anymore. My problem is with that much LESS money going through the business that is the FL DOC...the inmates are going to be treated even worse when all that catches up in September and further on. People now have to wait FIVE years for civil rights and now they can't smoke anymore in prison? Good luck FL.

My man heard the same rumor and wanted me to check it out. I agree that there's a huge rumor mill in there so this might just be nothing... if anyone comes across anymore info on this, please let me know. M does smoke, and while I would be happy if he quit, going cold turkey would be really rough on him so I'm worried.

It's true. It was announced on the DOC website. (I can't post links yet). However inmates will still find a way to smoke. I imagine they'll get cigarettes from the C.O.s for a price.

Yep, it's supposed to happen in the next 6 months. I've been getting google alerts like crazy due to the announcement. Supposedly they will give smoking cession (sp?) to any inmate who wants it.

You are probably right. But, I really see the majority quitting only because it more than likely won't be a steady source of tobacco... which sort of defeats the purpose I would think. Or they will get tired of paying stupid prices! I see every nook and cranny stuffed with a secret stash of tobacco before it all kicks off! Instead of 5 gallon barrells of buck being burried on the rec yard they will have baggies of cigs!

I do know this much... my ex husband who still works for DOC has told me all hell would break loose if they ever took tob away.... that it is the only thing that calms him at work (very high strung and macho ego) I really REALLY REALLY would hate for all those COs coming off of TOB around our loved ones. I have seen him try 3 times (not pretty) and HAD to stay from him for days.

DOC makes the same amount of money from the canteen every day no matter whether a single inmate spends a single penny in the canteen or not. The days that the canteen is down for maintenance this week? The state will still make $.96/per inmate per day because of how the contract with Keefe, the canteen contractor, works. The state gets a flat fee based on inmate population, not part of the sales.

Keefe will be the one losing money when cigarette sales stop, so that is why I believe that the state is having to allow them to bring in something (MP3 players) to replace the income that Keefe is losing. Otherwise in 2014 (I think that is the year) when the contract is up for renewal, no one is going to want to pay $.96 a day to the state for the contract because they won't be making near as much from it.

You know, most likely the majority of each population will wait to quit until the last possible day - and since they are not quitting on their own free will, there are going to be a lot of irritated individuals at one time. It's not going to be pretty.

They are setting up smoking areas for the CO's outside of the fences supposedly to avoid that issue.

How well do think it will be when they come back into the dorms smelling like tobacco. It's not going to be pretty....

Not just that but why are they going to let officers off their posts for a nic fit? Also, anyone going in and out the gate is to be searched regardless of who they are. Is DOC going to make new positions to cover that or are they going to pull even more officers off their post?

I doubt it, Scott is't going to do more hiring. He wants to cut the budget not add to it.

It was a rhetorical question, I was just pointing out another way they are compromising safety and security by taking out the tobacco.

Ok I gotcha, it seems to be a no win situation. And people don't realize how ugly it is going to be. What they should be concerned with is their loved one's. I'm not saying they aren't, but they aren't looking at the big picture.

I completely agree. I had to have Chantix to quit, I couldn't imagine doing it cold turkey. Even with the meds it didn't stop my irritability only the craving for the nicotine. This really is going to get ugly in there.

I agree. Tobacco is really bad for your health, & family are spending a lot of money $$ on that.
Good luck ♣ !!

Other states as well as Fed facilities have done this so I see why FL thinks they need to do this too. It can be done and if FLDOC wants it done, it will be done. No use bitching about it. And, yes, my husband uses tobacco but it is what it is.

Default Prison Chief BANS Smoking in FLDOC!!!!!!!

Hi everyone~

My fiance just informed me that they were all notified today that as of Sept 1 there will no longer be smoking allowed anywhere within the Florida prison system....

My question......ARE THEY SERIOUS?!

Sorry, I don't even smoke, but I understand how seriously bad this is going to be.....my fiance smokes a pack a day has for 30 yrs and now he just can't?

Yes, I realize they are in prison they have no rights basically, but what a way to really make them suffer.....I think this sucks and I am writing Tally!

They are probably just trying to keep up with all the other states who have had this rule for years.

I know that it will cause ALOT of problems for our inmates. there will be many more fights, DR's and tenson so thick you can cut it with a knife as soon as this is activated. Straight up... Im worried.

Yep. Just talked to Ben and one of the first things he said was the COs are ticked because it affects them too.

Personally I'm delighted with the upcoming cigarette ban. Those inmates who don't smoke have been adversely affected for years and nobody cared. This measure is like ripping off a bandage, and things will be rough for awhile for everyone, but it will be interesting to revisit this subject a year after it's been in effect. I'm betting some minds here will be changed. Saving money sent to loved ones to support an addiction, improved health for inmates and those around them -- these are admirable goals. It will be interesting to see how the black market economy adjusts. Marijuana gets smuggled in so why not tobacco. But on the whole once this adjustment period passes, I'm betting we'll all see improvements.
