I finally found the statement from Buss about no smoking and employees can smoke outside the gate. I printed it off and took it with me to visit today. One of the COs told me the smoking area has always been in front of the Admin building.

Question is will the be able to go outside the fence for smoke break. Ben says his dorm or even the rec yard isn't close to the center gate. By the time those guards get to the front gate and processed out (waiting for the sally port to be opened, showing their badge to get out the front gate, etc) their break will over.

If they aren't going to allow it for the guys and staff during their everyday routine, they aren't going to allow it while they are at visitation.

Yes, since cigarettes will be rated as contraband it will be against the rules to bring them in, even to viso, right?

Im sure it's to save DOC money for the healthcare expenses smoking can cause. They are at least supposedly offering cessation programs

Main reason was to cut down on health care costs, I want to say when it was first announced back in I think March, that is what they said. Gov Scott has made many cuts to the Prison System as a whole. Prisons had to figure out ways to do incorporate less funding.

I just found a link that explains some of it from some news articles....

Default FL DOC Website

Go to the FL DOC web-site - they have a countdown clock going for when all institutions are smoke free.

I had a guard (who smokes) tell me that the guards will be getting a separate area so they can keep on smoking. She said there is no way they will force the guards to go without cigs because they would have too many quit. So, I guess no grumpy guards, but what a double standard! Also, the smoking cessation program is that for the first month you can pay $35 or so for patches...

don't put it past them to start weaning out the smokers. There are places who hire non-smokers....

Actually, they probably won't. Inmates smoke tobacco and marijuana in their cells a lot and the guards ignore it. At least at SRCI Annex, they do.

The Re-entry Center is also going smoke free, if this is for health issues I could agree, but I feel it's just another way for them to control them. My husband dips, but he is trying to quit so it wont be difficult when this comes out. I know my prayers are going out to all the inmates for strength to endure.

They've already stopped ordering tobacco for the canteen at Ben's facility. One of the canteens is already completely out and they haven't replenished the stock.

Mine said packs are going for about $25 and one cigarette is $1 I hope he meant buying from other inmates and not that the canteen is gouging prices like that. I got the "Don't forget cigarettes!" when we discussed my next visit tonight...lol. He's smoked more inside than he did out.

They are also sold out of almost all tobacco at the canteen in my husband's camp already, and have been for awhile.

I'm in a bad mood thinking about this no smoking. Guards/employees can still smoke but it must be outside the gate is my understanding.

I dont see DOC saving money on healthcare. Its that terrible monster called 2ed hand smoke, then the 3ed hand smoke that is going to kill all the inmates because they will be around employees that smoke. I dont see where its going to cut costs of healthcare. What I do see is trouble in the dorms, and who is who on the take, then catch them smoking.

What about the money Fl makes from cigaretts? the tax money?

Another thought is visit from people who smoke going into visit and smell like cigarettes. Wont this make the guys that cant/wont quit smoking want a cig even more?

I havent seen it mentioned, but I believe its illegal to smoke in any State Facilities, so how are the employees going to get around that if its ever brought up.

From my understanding, where my husband is the COs said they cant smoke on the grounds period. I truthfully back the no smoking stuff... maybe its cause me and my husband arent smokers and the smell of ciggerettes makes both of us sick... i think its nice that the DOC atleast supplied Canteen with the patch or whatever it is... to help them =)

I just now hung up the phone from my son (CFRC-E). He said the cig's are still the reg price in Canteen. There are long lines @ the Canteen, many are buying cigs, but they are reg price.. not price gouging & they have not run out .. yet. He did purchase 3 packs in the event that they do start. He thinks that they may as there is rumor.
