The "visitation cancelled" banner on the web page almost always means a lockdown is active.

Thank you everyone! We are still new to the workings of FCI Berlin, so I appreciate the feedback. When we spoke last he did mention having a feeling they would be going into lockdown soon for some reason. Now we wait.....Thanks again!!

I spoke to someone this morning, she has no idea when the lockdown will be lifted. She knows this weekend and the week they will be on lockdown next weekend she doesn't know. She said to keep looking on the site.

Thumbs up Email from FCI Berlin

I received an email from FCI Berlin time-stamped today at 10:20 a.m. Apparently everyone is now trying to reach out to their family and loved ones so they're lining up at the computers and phones. Still the 'no visits' banner is still displayed on the FCI Berlin website. He didn't mention anything about a lockdown or the lockdown being over, but he said he'd write more once everything had settled down. So hopefully you'll all get news (emails or calls) from FCI Berlin soon!

Default FCI--Berlin

My husband has been calling the last 3 nights around 8pm. Still in lockdown but able to move around their cell blocks a bit now. Finally after 10 days they just received clean laundry, but still no store or regular meals. They are eating bagged meals and snacks are starting to become scarce. He doesnít know what happened but knows the ďholeĒ was cleared out on Monday 11/7 and 30 or so new men were put in. Something about several cells being investigated and red tape around them. He didnít say exactly what happened, but from what I gathered itís drug related. Should be over soon though, as privileges are starting to be reinstated slowly, but definitely starting to happening. He said he was hoping to start work again soon, but was uncertain to when that would be. If anyone has any direct questions I can try to answer, please donít hesitate to ask. I know itís been a long stretch and I sympathize with each and everyone of you. Chins up, should be over soon.

NH prison chaplain allegedly smuggled drugs to inmates
By Elizabeth Dinan
Posted Nov 15, 2018 at 3:29 PM
Updated Nov 15, 2018 at 5:42 PM

PORTSMOUTH ó A prison chaplain was arrested Thursday for felonies alleging he smuggled cellphones, marijuana, Suboxone and tobacco into the federal men's prison in Berlin, where he sold the contraband to inmates.

According to a federal affidavit, chaplain Joseph Buenviaje, 53, of Berlin, sold the phones, drugs and tobacco to inmates for approximately $12,000 this year. Buenviaje told federal investigators he had been selling the items to incarcerated men who owed him another $3,000 to $5,000, court records state.

"Buenviaje said that he knew it was a crime to introduce the contraband into FCI Berlin and was aware he could go to prison if he was caught," according to the affidavit by federal Department of Justice special agent Dennis Matulewicz.

The affidavit states an investigation began Oct. 2, based on information from a cooperating inmate witness. The witness said he used a contraband cellphone to order more phones from Verizon, QVC and other sources and had the phones shipped to another inmate's "wife or girlfriend." She repackaged the phones and sent them to "JCMC Muslim Ministries" in Berlin, at an address only listed to Buenviaje, the affidavit states.

On Nov. 5, two special agents met with Buenviaje at the federal prison, where he agreed to be interviewed and confessed to smuggling the items into the prison since April 2018, federal records allege. On the same date, he consented to a search of his prison office where 40 Suboxone strips, nine bags of tobacco and $8,120 in cash were found, the affidavit states.

After also consenting to a search of his car parked in the prison lot, the agents found 75 more Suboxone strips, six SIM cards for cellphones, two cellphone batteries and bank receipts alleged to show deposits of cash for his sales inside the prison.

"After the search, Buenviaje told me that he intended to bring the contraband items recovered from his vehicle into the FCI Berlin the following day (Nov. 6, 2018)," the affidavit states.

The prison chaplain also confessed to smuggling notebooks into the prison with pages "soaked with an unknown drug," in exchange for payment, it's alleged. One of the notebooks field tested for the drug Ketamine, the agent reported.

The affidavit states the allegations were probable cause that Buenviaje committed the crimes of "bribery of a public official" and "providing or possessing contraband in prison." Federal court records note he was arrested on Thursday.

A prison spokesman said Buenviaje has been employed by FCI Berlin since October 2015 and remains an employee. The spokesman said he could not comment further due to Buenviaje's privacy rights as an employee.

In an announcement Thursday afternoon, U.S. Attorney Scott Murray said, "Public employees are expected to act with integrity. We will always be alert to instances of criminal misconduct by federal employees. In order to ensure that the public has confidence in its public servants, federal employees who violate the public trust by breaking the law will be investigated and prosecuted."

Murray said the U.S. Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General investigated the case, with support from FCI Berlin's Office of the Special Investigative Supervisor. He said the case is being prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew T. Hunter and Assistant U.S. Attorney Anna Z. Krasinski and reminded the criminal complaint is an allegation and Buenviaje is presumed innocent.

Unhappy 17 November 2018: again no emails leaving FCI Berlin?

Today is November 17th, my friend had been sending me emails back and forth all week, yesterday he called me, but today nothing, which is not like him. I checked the FCI Berlin website, but I see no notifications whatsoever. He did tell me though that both staff and men were still very nervous after last week's lockdown and that things hadn't really gone back to normal yet. I hope they haven't locked them up again with just baloney sandwiches to eat and showers every 3 days only. I wonder if the arrest of the chaplain has anything to do with it. Does anyone have more information about what's going on at FCI Berlin? Thanks!

bop Chaplains are corrections officers, so God takes second place to bop rules. At one FCI where I worked in the Chapel, the now retired Chaplain was number one for sending inmates to the SHU, mostly for petty violations.

Church officials being paid by the federal government; that is the status of the bop's idea of separation.

My husbands said there are about 175 guys in the hole right now. A lot of guys got messed up in this whole Chaplin situation. He said the hole is packed right now. I messaged him last night to see if and when you are placed in the hole if communication with family/friends is not permitted. No answer yet, but I can let everyone know later if perhaps this is the reason for the lack of communication. Not to say anyoneís loved one is down there, but itís a possibility. Hopefully things will settle soon, and everyone will hear from their loved ones this week for the holiday. Thinking about you all and keeping everyone in my prayers.
