Default Tallahatchie Correctional Facility - Tutwiler Mississippi

Hi Amy,

Since you are the Mississippi Forum Leader, I thought I'd address this to you. My son is in the Tallahatchie Correctional Facility which houses the majority of the Hawaiians. Do you know anything about that facility? Just recently, my son just got put in the hole because of an "investigation" wherein they took a about 80 inmates to the hole. He is coming out this week (praying to God). I'm not sure if this is common in prison but do you know anything about that prison? Any info is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

I personally don't know anything about that facility. I don't think it has ever held Mississippi inmates, but I am not sure. Maybe someone will come along that can answer your questions and give you some information.

Hi HurtingMom,

The Tallahatchie facility is actually not a Mississippi DOC facility - it's owned by the private corrections company CCA - but that's OK, you can still post about it in the Mississippi or the Hawaii forum - since it is currently housing Hawaii prisoners it would actually be considered under contract with the Hawaii DOC so I am going to move this thread over there to the Hawaii forum...

My boyfriend was one of the Alabama prisoners housed there last year, he was there from last September to early February - I can probably answer most of the questions you may have. One thing I will say is it's a very nice facility (for a prison) and the staff there, for the most part, was wonderful - they really put some of the Alabama DOC employees and policies and procedures to shame, comparatively. I would say it's almost the perfect prison except for the lockdown time - when my guy was there they were locked down in their pods 22 hours a day and only outside 2 hours a day - and there weren't many activities/trades/etc. available at the time.... for the first several months everyone there seemed to do okay but after they had been there a few months I could tell the extended lockdown periods were not only getting to my guy but many others. Most of the Alabama guys came from an Alabama prison where there is freedom to go outside all the time and move about the camp, so the lockdown at Tallahatchie was really hard for them to adjust to and deal with.

The visitation procedures there are awesome - puts Alabama WAY to shame - and the food is very, very good, another big plus over Alabama prisons.

The hole is pretty regular punishment for various offenses all over the country, but it is a little unusual, I will admit, to hear of so many sent to the hole at once.

Again, any questions you may have about the facility, feel free to ask....

Lys

My son is also in Tallahatchie. He said that it is better than Halawa which is the prison in Hawaii that he was transfered from in June. When he first arrived he was put into what they called the SHIP program which is really the hole. From what I understand they are in their cells for most of the day with only 1-2 hours of recreational time in what he described as a large dog pen. Once he was moved into General Population things have become much better. I have not heard of anything that has happened that would put 80 inmates into the hole but I will ask my son if he knows anything when he calls this week and let you know. If you would like to email me on my personal email address please feel free to do so, it is please pm member email addy rmvd per PTO policy. My thoughts are with you as I know that this is also a nightmare for us parents. Take Care.

Thank you Lys for the info. It sounds like being locked down is very common there. At least, I feel a little comfort knowing that it is. He's out of the hole now but inmates keep on getting put in the hole for "no apparent reason" as I was told. One will never know what goes on in there. It just drives me crazy with sleepless nights not to know the unknown. Thanks again.

THIS IS IN REPLY TO "HURTIN MOM" I'M A PAROLEE THAT DID MAJORITY OF MY TIME IN THE MAIN LAND FACILITIES. I DID OVER 5 YEARS. THE LAST 2 1/2 OF WHICH WAS IN THE HOLE FROM WHICH I FINNALY PAROLED FROM. I PROBABLY KNOW YOUR SON OR HE KNOWS ME. WHAT YOUR SON IS GOING THROUGH IS MASS PUNISHMENT AND TERROR TACTICS USED BY THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE FACILITY TO CONTROL THE INMATE POPULATION. THIS HAPPENS WHEN STAFF LOSES CONTROL OF THE FACILITY TO THE INMATES BECAUSE OF INCOMPETENT AND POORLY TRAINED OFFICERS. THEY PUNISH AN ABSURD AMOUNT OF PEOPLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF A FEW. THEY THEN USE A TICKET OUT OF THE HOLE IN RETURN FOR INFORMATION REGARDING OTHER INMATES.
IF ANYTHING HAWAII INMATES STICK TOGETHER ESPECIALLY SO FAR AWAY FROM HOME. THE INMATES SEE THE CROOKED WAY THINGS ARE RUN AND SO. THE INMATES WILL NOT COOPERATE. NOR SHOULD THEY. WE'RE THE ONES WHO HAVE TO HAVE TO LIVE THERE. IT'S OUR HOME. THEY JUST WORK THERE AND GO HOME WHEN THIER 9 TO 5 IS DONE. DON'T WORRY MOM. THEY WILL USUALLY RELEASE EVERY ONE AFTER 3 DAYS TO A WEEK. ONLY IN CASES OF A RIOT OR OTHER GREAT PROBLEMS THAT THE ADMIN WILL NOT RELEASE THE BOYS. STICK BY YOUR SON. HE NEEDS YOUR LOVE AND SUPPORT AND SOLID ADVICE. THE ONLY SUPPORT HE HAS UP THERE IS WHAT FEW INMATES HE'LL MEET THAT WILL STEER HIM STRAIGHT. CERTAINLY NOT THE RENTA COPS THAT CALLTHEMSELVES " CORRECTIONS OFFICERS" WHO HAVE LESS TRAINING AND GET PAID LESS THAN THE GUARDS AT PEARLRIDGE.

Hi USOChino:

Thank you so much for replying! Finally, someone from the inside who has had experience! Reading your reply makes me feel better. I've been going through so much since he's there.. the worrying, the stress. I am right beside him. I'll always be here for him. He's been in the hole a few times and I haven't heard from him for a week now. I think he's in the hole again because I usually send him money to call me and he hasn't called. I pray to the Lord that he's safe.

Thank you again!

Dear USO from the islands, just wanted to thank you for all the information, that was so good to read you actually brought some joy but then some hurt because I didn't have clue of how bad the lockdown crap is. Anyways I use to be a SISTA if you know what I mean I lived in Hawaii for 10 yearsI married a native from there you probably know him then probably not, he was all caught up with the batu if you know what I mean which is why he is probably in Tallahatchie MS but hey who hasn't been caught up with that right? Well I the last time I saw my husband was in hawaii when I was living in Alewa Heights about 4 years ago and according to him and I we have come to the terms of divorce but it never happened, so not too long ago I got my act together and left the islands I needed family support and came back to my other home California, So I left without seeing my husband but when I got on that plane which was Oct 2003 I knew already tha he was in Halawa but as a week and half ago I found out he is in Mississippi in this facility called Tallahatchie Correctional Facility so as soon as I got all the numbers I called there and left my number for him to call and the very next day which was on saturday april 2nd. he called we talked briefly and really sucked because we had a lot of things to figure out, but there is no way anyone can when all you get is 5 min's. So whats the deal with the inmates using the phones there do they have to pay all the time or can they call collect? I would really appreciate for a little more info if you dont mind, you really have helped a lot of us in this forum and just want to let you know that it was greatly appreciated I felt all the aloha cuz lol. Oh yeah one more question when you get released do you get shipped back to the state or can someone pick you up from the correctional facility there in MS? I would appreciate it k? ALOHA AND MAHALO my brudda!!
Sincerely MissFemmeNu God Bless

Aloha, MissFemmeNu in Cali and welcome to PTO. I don't know too much about Tallahatchie Correctional Facility, as my guy did his time on-island. USOChino hasn't posted since January 2005 but I hope that he comes back to answer your questions or one of our other members might be able to help you.

I do know one thing about the mainland prisons. They do send them home when they get close to parole time. "When" is the operative word. My understanding is that it usually occurs when they have the staff to "escort" them back.

I hope that someone will be able to give you the answers you seek. Take care and feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Default Collect calls

Hi MissFemmeNu,

I want to congratulate you for starting over, packing up and leave with a fresh new start. I'm trying to have my daughter in law to live w/me but she is caught up in that batu.

Just commenting on the phone privileges. My son calls me constantly because I send him money for his phone time, however, they are allowed to call collect. Collect calls are exorbitant in the prison so I opt to just send him cash so that the collect call long distance bill does not excalate.

Hope this sort of helps.

Have a good day!

My husband was one of the Alabama inmates that was transfered to that facility in 2003. He was there almost a year. I don't know about the video visits. I know when he had visits it was for both Sat. and Sun all day visits. Of course that has been over 2 yrs ago and I am sure alot has changed over there. While he was there they had cable/satilite TV and he said the food was great because they had some place cater there food.

You need to contact the prison, and ask them for info on doing another visit.

You need to call Halawa and ask for the phone number for the mainland branch of PSD. They will give it to you. Depending on where you are visits are scheduled every month except for us on the big island and the other islands are once every 3 months.

I have a question...actually a few. My husband will be transferring from Cali to Tallahatchie next week and want to know how the programs are for the inmates there. Also how are the visiting? Are family members processed fast to get in to see their loved ones?

Hey folks!

I am Jonathan the moderator for the Mississippi Forum here on PTO.

We know that many of your loved ones in California have been moved here to Mississippi, and most of them placed in TCCF or better known as Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility.

This prison is located in Tutwiler, MS

It opened in March of 2000 and is operated by Correctional Corporation of America.

It is located on 149 Acres and enclosed on 27 Acres.

The authorized Capacity is 1000+

TCCF Houses Class C Security Offenders

TCCF Is ACA Accredited as of September 2005

Programs that are offered:

Recreation
Adult Basic Education (GED)
Faith Base
Alcohol and Drugs

The contact information for TCCF is:

259 U.S. Highway 49 South
Tutwiler, MS 38963
662-345-6567

Monday and Tuesday from 8am to 12pm and then from 1pm untill 5pm.

You must be on approved visitation list. If you are not on an approved visitation list you must call the California DOC and find out the procedure for getting added to the visitation list for that inmate.

The closet airport is Memphis, TN and you can fly into their and get a rental car and drive to Tutwiler. That is about a 1 1/2 hour drive from Memphis.

To send mail use the following;

Inmates Name - Inmates CADOC #
TCCF
259 U.S. Highway 49 South
Tutwiler, MS 38963

You will be processed rather quickly and be able to visit for 2 days about 8 hours each day. You will have to leave for 1 hour for them to be fed and countdowns this is from 12 -1

Saulnme4ever, welcome to the Mississippi forum.
Some other CA folks have been making calls to TCCF and posting what they learn in this thread.
http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=287247

What Jonathan posted just above is all that is on MDOC site regarding TCCF.

Just read through all the threads in this subforum to get all we know.

As you learn more, please come and post for others going through the transfer process.

Google CCA and then select the link and it'll list various private institutions. Select TCCF.
