Default Sheriffs allegedly keeping inmate food funds

http://www.al.com/news/birmingham/in...ed_over_7.html

Quote:
The money in the account was allocated by federal, state and municipal governments to feed inmates in the Etowah County jail, but was not used for that purpose and was instead personally pocketed by Entrekin.
Quote:
Many Alabama sheriffs contend that the practice of keeping "excess" inmate-feeding funds for themselves is legal under a state law passed before World War II.

Default Another Etowah County story

http://www.al.com/news/birmingham/in...harges_fo.html

Four days after talking to the press about the sheriff's use of inmate feeding funds, a man was in jail on multiple drug charges.

Quote:
Matthew Qualls questioned why Entrekin paid him to mow the lawn at his personal home in 2015 using taxpayer funds allocated for the feeding of inmates in the county jail. Entrekin confirmed that he personally pocketed some of the funds.

As of Tuesday morning, Qualls faced six charges and was being held on $55,000 bail in the Etowah County jail, which Entrekin oversees. Qualls had not been arrested before, according to state records.

Police say the arrest began with an anonymous tip.
In my firm opinion Qualls should be transferred to a different jail.

Default If your LO ever complains about prison food.....

There’s a new case in the news that’ll show you a major part of why so-called “prison food” is what it is. Google the name “Todd Entrekin” and you’ll find a bunch of hot news stories about the Alabama Sheriff named Todd Entrekin.

It appears that Sheriff Entrekin stole $750K of government money that was intended to buy food for prisoners and he then bought himself a $740K beach house with the money. He apparently even listed that amount of income in some kind of statement he had to file.

The stupidity and brazen corruption of this pig are absolutely breathtaking. I can’t imagine how anybody could be so stupid and brazenly corrupt. I saw corrupt system employees stealing stuff and bringing in the contraband for us prisoners during my time inside, but they were all penny-ante. This jerk takes the cake. I hope this guy does some serious time inside, but I suspect the worst punishment he’ll likely face will be having to retire early in order to keep his big fat pension. That’s the way our jail/prison systems work.

The problem is, most inmates can't afford to have loved ones send in $200+ per month to pay for food off commissary. And they shouldn't have to.

This type of corruption, as noted in the OP, is a big part of problem, especially in county jails where sheriffs have total discretion over inmate food budgets.

If the Alabama state legislature isn't willing to act to close such loopholes that allow this type of graft to happen, the ACLU and courts will have to become involved.

And hopefully this corrupt Republican sheriff will be voted out of office this year.

Very interesting. Prison corruption happens a lot in China too. In China this is no secret.

Corruption is no secret in America either. Neither everyone on here has stories of the system doing their loved ones wrong in one way or another. Prison and jail corruption can be found nearly everywhere with a quick google search.

I read recently that if the sheriff keeps costs say down to .10 cents a day and they are allowed $1. the sheriff gets the .90 cents. Crazy but very true. My husband who was supposed to be on Ensure or Boost was given a cheese sandwich 3 times a day for over a year, because medical said it cost to much for a dietary supplement.

Yep.

I try to save my outrage for situations I can change.

I am failing.

My bf is supposed to be on prescribed cholesterol medicine, can't remember the name of it though. Because he's only in till May, they said it's too expensive to get it for him O_o , and he asked them what should he do then (because he's now worried what if I have a stroke or heart attack), and they said walk and exercise which he does anyway, other then the high cholesterol he's a pretty healthy guy, he walks all the time, eats as healthy as you can eat in prison. I was rather not surprised but also shocked because last time he was in, they immediately gave it to him without hesitation but then last time he was in a better prison. And his last sentence was the same sentence he has now, so go figure.
