Default Albany NY Area Pack the Court

For those in the Albany NY area interested in making sure that everybody has equal access to representation, please consider standing together here:
Tuesday, Oct. 14 come to Albany for opening arguments in a historic court case that will ensure that all New Yorkers – rich and poor – get access to lawyers if they are accused of crimes.

Hurrell-Harring v. New York

challenges New York State’s failure to provide public defense services to poor people accused of crimes, a violation of the U.S. constitution, state constitution and the laws of New York.
The NYCLU will be packing the court to send a message to the governor and the state’s leaders that everyone has a right to representation – justice cannot be a luxury for the rich!
Who'd have thought more than 50 years after Guideon v. Wainright this would still be an issue?

Showing up in support of equal access and representation for all will send a clear message to the courts and the justices that this is a serious issue and that we will not tolerate the failure of the Courts to act in the interests of justice. Your presence can be a real voice for change - let the judges hear your opinion by being present and standing up to support equal access and representation for all.

ALBANY COUNTY COURTHOUSE, entrance on Lodge Street, corner of Lodge and Columbia Streets, Albany

You can look for the glut of people, or you can ask the CoC or the bailiffs for the particular courtroom. The NYCLU will be there, so will the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and a variety of other interested communities.

And, if you're into it and in the area on Nov. 1, think about this as well:
Quote:
POLICE, PRISONS AND MASS INCARCERATION: A COMMUNITY SPEAKOUT FOR TRUTH, JUSTICE, AND RECONCILIATION

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 1ST
10:30 A.M. - - 2:30 P.M.
ALBANY PUBLIC LIBRARY
161 WASHINGTON AVENUE, ALBANY

FREE AND WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE
A LIGHT BRUNCH WILL BE SERVED

Please RSVP and share on Facebook:
https://www.facebook.com/events/488665011267941/

COME OUT AND SPEAK OUT!
If you or a family member have ever been in prison or jail
If you are concerned about the impact of policing and prisons on our communities
If you are working on community-based solutions
COME OUT AND LISTEN!

Presented by Capital Area Against Mass Incarceration, Center for Law and Justice, Citizen Action of New York, Friends for Racial Justice, Albany New Jim Crow Study Group, New York State Prisoner Justice Network, NYCLU Capital Region Chapter and Organization for a Free Society.
The Pack the Court event depends on bodies. The Nov. 1 allows greater participation/networking. One of the things I hear a lot is about a lack of support for the families of the incarcerated, and one of the things I advocate a ton is that we all need to change the legislation. Pack the Court is about making a significant change to how a defendant is defended. The Nov. 1, event is a chance to ask questions, listen to people involved, make contacts, and get informed on upcoming legislation.

Get involved if at all possible. Use your voice. Use your body. You might see me at both events.

We thought this was a sure thing, but it's been postponed. The email I got today says;

Quote:
The Hurrell-Harring trial has been postponed to October 20 and we are no longer planning on packing the court because it could get postponed again!
Will let you know if we have something like this coming up again.

Do still invite you to the Nov. 1 event.
