Talking New York inmates defeat Harvard debate team

(CNN)In a debate between Harvard College students and those from any other college, some might guess that the students would win. And if the other side was a group of inmates at a maximum-security prison? Maybe even more so.

I've seen this on several forums. It's amazing that people comment and think that the inmates have an advantage. It's even more amazing to read that they will have an advantage in getting a job because they don't have to worry about paying back their loans for school, and that they will just also "lie" on their application.

I think it really shows what potential exists in education.

I did not dig very far, but I am curious whether they did it as a CCX format or an LD format (those that have debated should know what I mean)...I know many moons ago when I was on a debate squad, I had two distinctly different styles depending on whether I was in a team CCX format or the individual LD format.

The LD format was much more persuasive in nature and I had found that I could concede many points but argue in favor of a 51-49 sort of a split in favor of whichever side I was supposed to be arguing.

CCX was a different animal...I did ok with it, but much preferred LD. And I HATED judging CCX when I was asked to judge a high school tourney being held at a school where I did my undergrad. Enunciation was horrible by so many of the perceived top squads...they were trying to word vomit for the entire speaking time and many points got lost even when trying to keep an organized flowsheet...
