Default Google voice

My son is at FSL Elkton. He has been calling using money we sent him. He sent us a letter and said we should get a Google Voice number with a local area code of the prison and then a list of the second 3 numbers to use. I have never set anything like this up and wonder what others here have any experience with.

Google Voice is not permitted.

Other options are Prison Connect (which I use) or pigeonly to obtain a local number..

Hope this helps

You can buy a cheap cell phone with a number close to the prison that will make calls cheaper.

This is the safest BoP approved way.

Call forwarding is not allowed by the bop, and google voice is call forwarding. Some inmates have used it without being caught, but the ones who are can (and many have) lose all phone access for up to 3 years,

A cell phone that is assigned a local number to the prison (area code and prefix) is allowed because the phone that is called is the one that is answered, regardless of where it is physically located. His call charges will drop from 21 cents to 6 cents/min, but you may incur extra cell phone costs on your end.

I thought Google Voice was not going to work. Just reading about it and found that it is call forwarding. Now to figure out what other options we have. He also mentioned Straight Talk.
What are others here using?

My husband is yet to be sentenced so obviously he has not been placed anywhere. However I have At&T and according to their website I can change my number for $36. As long as they will give me one in the area code I will need then I suspect that is what I will do. It's worth looking into. Straight talk is a prepay through Walmart. I suspect you could get any number you would like.

Be aware that all number prefixes in an area code are not necessarily local calls to your prison. If you end up with one, right area code but the wrong prefix, the inmate will still pay the long distance rate of 21 cents/minute in all bop owned federal prisons.

When I was at Elkton, quite a few of the inmates were using google voice. As others said, it is not allowed by the BOP. While I was there, I never heard of anyone getting caught with using it. However, the suggestion of getting a cell phone with one of the local area codes (Lisbon, Ohio area code is 330) is the safest route to go.
I had heard that the 330 area code might be full, so other close by area codes that are still can be local are used. One of the area codes I remember being local also was Columbiana, OH which is 234.

It is no different from any conduct violation, you take your chances and when caught are punished far more severely than required by what you did.

Call forwarding is forbidden system wide, but enforcement of the ban falls to the warden and staff in each prison which is why it is handled so differently.
https://www.bop.gov/policy/progstat/5264_008.pdf

"8. PROCEDURES. The Bureau’s Inmate Telephone System is a
calling system that is available in all institutions operated by
the BOP.
To ensure the safety and security of the institution and
community, inmates must place all personal telephone calls
through the ITS and must not circumvent it via call forwarding,
including automatic electronic forwarding or any similar
telephone function.
Additionally toll-free or credit card calls
are not authorized, examples include telephone calls to 1-800, 1-
888, 1-877, 1-866, 1-900, 1-976, or to credit card access
numbers.

Telephone conduct violations associated with call forwarding include this "high severity" violation:

"297 Use of the telephone for abuses other than illegal activity which circumvent the ability of staff to monitor frequency of telephone use, content of the call, or the number called; or to commit or further a High category prohibited act.

These are the punishments (any or all) available to the disciplinary hearing officer for this violation.

A. Recommend parole date rescission or retardation.
B. Forfeit and/or withhold earned statutory good time or non-vested good conduct time (up to 100%) and/or terminate or disallow extra good time (an extra good time or good conduct time sanction may not be suspended.
B.1 Disallow ordinarily between 25% and 50% (14-27 days) of good conduct time credit available for year (a good conduct time sanction may not be suspended)
C. Disciplinary segregation (up to 6 months)
D. Make monetary restitution.
E. Monetary fine
F. Loss of privileges (e.g., visiting, telephone, commissary, movies, recreation, mattress).
I believe for up to 3 years
G. Change housing (quarters).
H. Remove from program and/or group activity.
I. Loss of job
J. Impound inmate’s personal property
K. Confiscate contraband.
L. Restrict to quarters
M.Extra duty
