Default How much is taken from their "check"

If an inmate is working 48 hrs at a rate of .3, that's about $14-$15 , how much of that do they actually get?

Or is it different for each inmate?

I'm not familiar with Arizona's policies, but I *think* they get it all unless they owe restitution or possibly owe fines, court costs, and/or child support etc. If I'm wrong, someone from Arizona will correct me

Restitution varies from case to case, so I can only assume that the % taken might vary from inmate to inmate as well. It would probably easier to just ask him

They'll also have money taken out to cover their gate fee, until that is covered. But even with gate fee, restitution, child support, or any other fees, DOC won't take all of it. What will be left might not be much though, and it will vary from inmate to inmate.

By law in Arizona creditors can take up to 50% (60% for child support). Restitution is 20% to 40% which is in their sentencing documents. The gate fee is money that is given to them when they leave prison (to afford a ride and a set of clothes presumably). It used to be $100 but went up (I think $250) and I don't remember how much per week they take out for that. If the inmate has any electronic devices, they are charged per month for electricity (I think it's $2, but I don't know for certain). They will deduct any fees for medical/dental appointments ($5 each). Then there are some other charges that always showed up on their paychecks, that we have no clue what they are for. My son's restitution was 20% and he was getting half of his paycheck the first few years.

Keep in mind, they will take restitution from any money you send him, although not the other charges.

Also, if the inmate is working a retention job, 35 percent of the gross goes to his or her Retention account. He or she gets that money at the end of their sentence. Retention jobs start at $3.00/hr - $4.25 and they are only on specific yards (minimum custody)

Just wanted to add that too the list of what others were saying.

My daughter has a retention job that started at 3.25 an hr. She had to get 250 into a gate fee (for departure) and now has a separate account for savings. She is charged $300 monthly for rent. In the end she only gets about $20 every two weeks to spend for commissary.

I made my son send me a paystub. He had to work at getting it from his CO but I wanted to see those "other" fees. They were real.

Also, have you checked the inmate data to confirm how many hours per pay period and the amount being earned? If an inmate is trying to pull one over on family and friends, they often times don't realize the information that is on the website about them.

(REMINDER - you can't send the inmate date printout to loved ones about themselves or anyone else.)
