Default Violent charge 18 years ago, will son go to Medium or Federal Prison camp?

my son went to state prison in 2001 for agg assault and weapons under disability and since has had a couple misdemeanors on his record hes now charged with money laundering and felon in possession.his self surrender letter says fci terra haute, would he likely self surrender to the medium prison and not the camp because he had a voilent charge 18 years ago?or could he still get the camp.the judge recommend Morgantown wv but the bop had other plans.any opions would be greatly appreciated im worried sick about him.

Good morning, I just wanted to say hi! My son is also in Federal, however I can’t answer your question, there will be people along in a little bit, this place has a wealth of information and the best and kind people you will ever meet! Sorry you are here under these circumstances.

Which Terre Haute prison will depend on the "custody score" he is assigned.
https://www.bop.gov/policy/progstat/5100_008.pdf

At his initial unit team meeting, he can ask for a copy of his custody score sheet. If he is in an incorrect level prison, he can file an inmate grievance to be moved to the correct security level prison.

Generally speaking, any sexual or violent offense, no matter how long ago, will disqualify the prisoner from minimum security camp. That's BOP's own rulebook. That said, this is BOP. Routinely, they selectively enforce or ignore their own rules. My LO knows someone whose clearly violent offense was waived, and he was moved to Otisville minimum, after sufficient pressure was applied from outside BOP.

“felon in possession”

This current charge counts as a violent charge and will prevent him from going to a camp.
