Hi.
Well each facility differs slightly, but the visits for the most part are 9-3. Max have visits everyday, mediums only on weekends. some facility's go by the odd and even number system.
You do not have to be on a visit list. All you need is a picture ID (I assume you are over 18).
It will be easier to tell you facility-specific rules and how visits are once you know where he is. There are threads specific to each facility. Most are table set-ups but some (like Clinton, for the first 60 days) are counter-like set ups. There are vending machines for you to buy food and drink. And you can take pictures, leave packages and money.

Happily, NY does not have lists. You bring your ID and fill out an application on the spot. There are van and bus services. He will PROBABLY go to Downstate first for processing. Visits there are not too bad and can be all day long If you search for it in the NY forum there's a lot of info

Thank You. I Thought That I Had To Be On Some Kind Of List Before I See Him. I Didnt Really Want To Tell Him When I Was Coming Because He Doesnt Think Im Going To See Him Once He Moves Up North. I Kind Of Want To Catch Him Off Guard.

You need to know where he is going first...but read basic rules...

http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=113512

Like someone said he will most likely go to Downstate, and then somewhere permanant

Read Stuff in Prison Profiles...

Look in the prison profiles section. There's a lot of stuff. It's mostly mediocre. It's kinda the Grand Central Station of the NYDOC, everyone coming and going.

Question I am New here, How to get to Downstate

Does anyone know the easiest way to get to Downstate Correctional Facility taking public transportation? My fiance is there for a few weeks and I really want to see him before he goes to his final destination. I miss him a lot and i'm looking forward to the 8 hour visit rather than the hour visits at Rikers. Anyways, if anyone knows the easiest route please reply!

Thank you,
Kristin & Daryan

You can take the metro north to downstate i think its like 15-20 dollars round trip. You can catch the metro north train at 42nd street and grand central. I believe the stop is beacon. after you get out you can catch a dollar van and downstate is about 5 mins away.

You can get visits at Downstate - it's just that they don't stay there long enough, usually, to be able to set up a visitation.

Any day of the week at Downstate? You better check on that by calling the facility first. I'm pretty sure Downstate visits are weekends only!

Downstate has visits seven days a week. The important thing is that you call the night before you go visit, to make sure he will be there. If you go to Prison Profiles, Mrs. G has posted a link that has TONS of info on Downstate.

They Haven't Sent Him Yet. Now We Are Not Sure What Is Going To Happen. One Minute They Tell Him That Hez Getting Moved, Then They Tell Him That He May Not Get Moved. I Am Not Sure What Is Going To Happen. Also, Thats For Checkin On The Situation. If Anything Changes, I'd B Sure To Update And Pm You. Thanks.

If you're in NY, then once he is in a facility (reception) that usually takes 4 months. He then will be transfered to his assigned facility. Once there he MUST be employed before he can apply for a Family Reunion visit, which takes 90 days after he is employed, anbd another 90 days from the application. If he has drugs or violent offense or a sex crime, he will have to take a program for at least six months before he can apply for Family reunion. Sorry I could not give you any better news....

Default welcome

on the family program, first it only offered at select prisons. Some make you finish a program, many let you apply as long as you are on the waiting list for a program (this is what was done with my son). But there is a lot of variation from place to place. He can apply when he gets to his permanent prisson and has been there for 90 days (assuming they do not make him wait to finish a proram). I never heard about having a job before--although everyone has a job--the 90 days started from the day my son arrived at his place--he did not get a job for several weeks thereafter.

About violent felony override--not easy to get. If he committed a crime in which there was no violence but which is classified as a violent crime (I think Burlary is one of them) he has a chance. But all that really gives him is the opportunity for work release when his sentence is less that 2 years. He can ask his counsellor at his REAL prison about that. Don't spend a lot time asking questions from the reception folk because if he goes to Downstate, he will not be there long.

by right clicking on a member's name, you can hit Send a PM and send them a private message-feel free to do that if I can help more. If you are in the city, read up on the Downstate Reception Center under New York Prison Profiles for more information.

Just answered your letter question in another thread. Downstate isn't that far away from the city. Train goes right to Beacon, takes about 1 1/2 hours, and then it's only a 3 minute ride to Downstate. If you have the chance to see him now, do it, because wherever they move him from Downstate is going to be way, way further.
