Unhappy My Brother's Suicide in Baltimore City Detention Center on 12/18/00--lacey3804

Hello Everyone: I am new to this so please bear with me.

I am responding to an article featured in Prison Talk involving suicide in prisons. http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/arc...pic/4042.html.

In that article it mentions my brother, whose name was Kevin Coffey. He was arrested on December 15, 2000 for stealing a cash register from a convenience store. He was desperate for money at the time of the robbery.

He had been a drug addict for most of his life and when he was arrested and processed, he was suffering withdrawal from the drugs. The article referred to him as a mental patient. The article goes on to state that the nurse on duty did not properly assess him and took him off of suicide watch.

On December 18, 2000, my brother hanged himself. He was the only family I had. FOr the past 3 years, I have blamed myself for his death. Imagine my surprise when I find out that the medical staff had ignored his condition which I think contributed to his death.

I am writing for any assistance that I can get with this matter. I have written a letter to the Mayor, Governor, Warden, ACLU, plus many others.

If anyone was incarcerated during this time and knows anything about my brother's suicide, please let me know. If anyone has any suggestions as to where to go next, please let me know.

I just want to make sure that another tragedy like this one doesn't happen again. I didn't have the money to bail him out and the ironic part is that I had to borrow the money for his funeral.

I am still filled with guilt and grief and if anyone out there has lost a close family member, you know how I am feeling.

Thanks very much and God Bless.

Karen Sherman

Welcome to PTO Karen. I am so sorry about your brother. I'm sure members will be along to welcome you as well as offer ideas on what you can do from here. It sounds like a lawsuit may be possible to me and you may want to seek legal advice if you want to pursue that....

As a new member you will want to read PTO's rules and policies and you can find them at: http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/sho...hreadid=23755.

Many years ago, I lost my brother ..basically to alcohol. I felt so much guilt because I had told him he could no longer stay with us due to the drinking. I felt it was a way to help him find real help with his problem. well, a month later he was struck by a car, in the middle of the night, he was in the middle of the road on his hands and knees...we never knew if he fell or if he was just waiting for a car to come along.
I know the pain of thinking somehow one is respnsible for such things. I know the guilt and the pain you have felt over your brother's death.
I have worked on this in many ways, I feel I have dealt with my feelings, it was over 20 years ago, and yet I have tears in my eyes as I write this.
So there's at least one person out here who knows what you feel and I hope it helps that you can realize you are not alone.

I wish you luck with the serach and I hope you can take the system to task over this.

hi & welcome to pto.

you might want to post this in the...MD (?) forum. you will get more responses there.

anyways, cheer up charlie. it is in no way, shape, or form, your fault that your brother died....gawd, i think that most of us ptoers feel guilty for one thing or another, yours was your bro's death. mine is my dads death--OD...(my reasoning is..MAYBE if he wasnt so screwed up in the head & MAYBE if i wasnt so "selfish" then he wouldnt be dead...i consider myself to be selfish for NOT wanting to get to know him sooner....) but look my dad was mentally unstable..he died of an OD. that was ALMOST 4 yrs ago, and life goes on. i cannot beat myself up for the way he lived his life, and i cannot blame myself for him being unhappy. i try to live each day for ME (now i do). but good luck. PM me if you need to talk.

toodles

Wish I could help...but I don't know of anyone in during that time. My man has been in the BDC a few times. He actually had a cousin who also committed suicide in a Baltimore Facility within the past 6 years.
I too am sorry about your brother!

Diane
