Default Concerning Lawrence Phillips who died at Kern Valley

Thought those of you with loved ones there would be interested in this article. Although the official word was suicide, it appears that it may have been otherwise.

Default RE: Death at KVSP

Just got this email. My prayers go out to the family and friends

Inmate Death at Kern Valley State Prison Being Investigated as Homicide
Posted: 06 Apr 2016 02:25 PM PDT
DELANO – Officials at Kern Valley State Prison (KVSP) are investigating the death of an inmate as a homicide.

Inmate Johnny R. Montenegro, 27, was found unresponsive in his cell at approximately 3 a.m. on Wednesday, April 6, 2016. KVSP staff immediately began lifesaving measures and an ambulance was called. Montenegro succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 3:48 a.m. His next-of-kin has been notified.

Montenegro was received by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) on May 13, 2015, from San Bernardino County to serve a three-year sentence for possession of or owning a firearm by a felon.

Prison officials have named Montenegro’s cellmate, Renick De Anda, 41, as a suspect. De Anda was received by CDCR on November 3, 2005, from Los Angeles County to serve a life-with-the-possibility-of-parole sentence for first-degree murder.

De Anda has been placed in the Administrative Segregation Unit pending the investigation by KVSP, the Kern County Coroner and the Kern County District Attorney. The Office of the Inspector General was notified.

Question

Why do they put persons who have committed murder in a cell with someone who did a robbery? I don't understand that. Can someone explain? Was reading Kern State Prison about the deaths of inmates from another inmate.

Not all convicted of murder are capable, or desiring, to commit that act again. Not all "non violent" offenders have a non-violent past or future. It would be a logistical nightmare to house inmates as violent/non-violent based on charges.

And there are people like my husband-- he's considered a violent offender but his crime rendered zero physical harm to a person. Who does he bunk with?

I believe the last death at KVSP was committed by someone with charges stemming from a hostage-taking and he had a relatively short term to complete. On paper he looked pretty "safe".

Edit: For what it's worth, it's my opinion that the facility itself breeds a culture of violence. Without going off on the subject of corruption, it's a huge factor.

Sending peace and respects to the affected families and loved ones of the deceased.
