What is a long and short date in Alabama?

I am completely new to the prison system as is my son. What is a long and short date. He is waiting transfer to kilby.

I'm not familiar with Alabama per se, but usually a short date (early release date) is the possible release date if they accrue good time that is deducted from their sentence. The long date is usually their "max date," or time to serve if they do not receive any good time.
