Default Nephew being released with no way home

Hi everyone.....after 10 years my nephew if finally being released on August 1st from Suwannee. I am so happy but also frustrated because his release officer just informed me that they will not supply a bus ticket for him to come home where his family is which is Mississippi. He has never had an excessive amount of money on his account as I could only give him $50 a month. I called greyhound and was told that even if I purchase him a ticket since he does not have a valid ID he would not be able to pick up the ticket. (he does have a birth certificate on file that they will give him and his inmate ID). I cannot drive the almost 800 miles one way to pick him up because I can't leave my elderly mother alone and she is unable to take a long trip like this. Also do you think when sending a EOS package of clothes that I will be able to put him a phone in there since he is being released. I want to be able to communicate with him on his trip back home.

If anyone can give me some options on what I may be able to do with this situation, I will be forever grateful.

No, I would not include a cell phone in his EOS package That would most likely end up as a contraband charge and cancel out his release date. Take no chances this close to coming Home!

As for the bus ticket....has his Home Plan in Mississippi been approved? If so, I'd raise heck about the bus ticket. You may want to speak with the Chaplain first, but I'd definitely contact the Warden as well:

Warden:

Good luck and congratulations on your nephew's soon release

Thank you for the quick response. His release officer said he will not be under any restrictions such as probation/parole since he is completing his sentence in full. I am going to contact the warden as you suggested. I was hesitant to do this because my nephew has been a target ever since I had to get AIG involved regarding abuse from a couple of staff members that sent my nephew to the hospital. I just want him to get through these last days and never look back.

Thanks again for the help.

The BOP puts people on Greyhound bus every day with just a prison ID... so if he’s got one of those, maybe that will help. You could check Amtrak too, I’m not sure what they would require for identification.

I would call the warden or the regional director. You can buy him a bus ticket his prison ID is a valid ID for this. I don't know what the rules are per se but I do know they can't just open the gate and say see you there has to be a release procedure like if he's not picked up then he is driven to the nearest bus station. I'd also contact the United Way in that area and maybe the salvation army. They might have some better ideas on what you can do. Good luck.

The rules indicate that even an inmate with no parole requirements will be issued a travel voucher for a bus ticket to an approved location. There’s a list of approved locations here... sounds like he needs to have a job lined up where you want him to come if it doesn’t meet the other criteria.

Thank you all for the responses. I have been made aware from Greyhound that I will be able to purchase him a gift ticket and he will only need the confirmation number and a password that I will choose when making the purchase. I will have to pay an $18 fee for this and that is okay with me. So a ticket will be around $65 so that's not bad.

I appreciate all the help from each of you.

My husband is at Suwannee Work Camp right now. Just wondering...where is the closest Greyhound? I do not remember seeing one in Live Oak...but, I havent explored the area a whole lot either. (P. S. I hate that place.)

You would probably have to google it!! Lot's of rural areas just have a designated spot along a deserted road that's the bus stop!!! Believe me I took one once from Zepherhills, Fl to Ft Lauderdale and it was out in the middle of nowhere.

I found these greyhound stations. The info is .....
Greyhound Bus Lines

706 Howard St W
Live Oak, FL 32064
(386) 362-1819

251 S Marion Ave, Lake City, FL 32025
Phone: (386) 752-3232

I am so happy that I will no longer have to deal with the DOC and especially Suwannee CI. My nephew is at the MP and it has been a nightmare for him. He only has 9 days left and when I spoke to him last he said both inmates and some of the CO's are making his days even more miserable so I can't imagine what that's like. He said they will not get the satisfaction of getting a "rise" out of him.

Good for him! They are trying my husband right now....and really pushing my buttons. One idiot...I mean officer...told another I was disrespectful. She just has NO clue. The dorm sgt told my husband, who told her that they didn't have a clue what can of worms they were opening and that IF I was being disrespectful, I would be in jail by then. lol I didn't have issues this past weekend at visitation. It does seem though that the officers are really trying families for some reason. The same weekend I had issues, there was another issue with an elderly visitor. She was crying in the VP and said she wouldn't ever come back because of how disrespectful and degraded that they made her feel.

Years ago I got kicked out of visiting for talking to another inmate the VP CO was a real bitch and I called and complained to the duty warden. I was so angry but knew if I said something then and there it would be a huge problem for my Husband. I never had a problem again with that one but then some new one didn't want to let me in over my shirt said it was a Tank top, it was a button down sleeveless shirt and the bitch CO was called and she said I was right!!!LOL I went and bought a bunch of those shirts and wore one all the time!!! I used there own rules back on them!!!

Hi all I have another question to ask. I want to send some money to my nephew for his bus trip home so he can purchase some food and snacks. Since all he will have is an inmate ID and his birth certificate would he be able to pick up money from a place like Western Union? His release officer said I cannot add money to his inmate account so I am trying to figure out a way to send money before his release next week.

As always, thanks for the help!

Can we wear a sleeveless top? Almost every shirt I own is sleeveless.

He will get gate money ... a “discharge gratuity” unless he has $100 in his account already, but then he’d get that money.

All this stuff is available online. You don’t even have to wonder.

Not in Florida. My husband never got gate money and no one else I know ever did. They shut down your account a month before release so most have nothing in it I also said the same thing when mine was getting out and he laughed said your kidding right?

Maybe he didn’t meet the qualifications. Their website lays out pretty specifically who gets it and who doesn’t.

I spoke to his release officer about the discharge gratuity and was informed he will NOT be getting any money. It seems there is always a loophole for them to get out of what's stated in the "rules". I emailed the warden and as nicely as i could asked him to explain to me why my nephew is not getting a bus ticket and any amount of gratuity since he ultimately can approve these things.

On the bright side, at this time next week my nephew will be a FREE man that will never look back
