Default Received inmate letter for previous tenant: Can I return to sender?

I received a letter from San Quentin that was meant for the previous tenant. If I write "return to sender" on the letter will it be returned to the person who sent it?

It should. The wobbler is that it depends on who's working in the facility mailroom. But I would do it just so you know you did what you could to try to let them know the address is no longer valid.

Depending on how long ago this person lived there, they may still have a valid forward on file. Just give it back to the letter carrier. They should know if there is still a good forward on file.
As to what SQ does with letters returned to them, I have no idea how they operate.
One would think they would return it to the inmate but who knows.

I'd just write not here on envelope and put it in the mail box. Not really your problem.
