Welcome to Prison Talk. I gave you your own introductory thread in the federal forums..

The bop sometimes places inmates in prisons closer than 500 miles from home, but more often send them far away. If his sentencing judge specifies which prison to send him to, all the bop will say is that they "consider" it as a suggestion.

The bop web page contains links to every bop owned prison, but not the privately owned ones. The A&O handbooks contain all of the inmate rules, and often mention job requirements and available programs. UNICOR is the prison industries plant at some prisons, but getting hired without prior UNICOR employment is very difficult. Every inmate will have a job, but kitchen and janitorial jobs are the most common.

Virtually all "programs" have been done away with. The drug abuse programs are always available, and a few of W's faith based programs still exist, but not much else.

To check the information about every prison, go to the main web page
https://www.bop.gov/

Locations and then "map of our locations"
https://www.bop.gov/locations/map.jsp

and finally type in the name of each prison you want to check here:
https://www.bop.gov/locations/search.jsp

Welcome to PTO. For designation, it is best to request the facility closest to you. Asking for multiple possible facilities is a non-starter, as I understand it, multiple requests just get ignored. If substance abuse is an issue, he should make sure it is clearly represented in the Pre-Sentence Report, since the Residential Drug Abuse Program does allow for treatment and time off the sentence.

Here is a link to the custody level program statement which is what the bop uses to determine the security level of the prisons he will be sent to. The actual form is included, so he can do his own estimate of what his level will be.
