Default Me and hubby having a contest over a garden bed

Hub got these two raised garden boxes. They are really nice, and they are at waist level so it should be easy to deal with.
So he kept after me asking me what I was gonna plant. He decided to put them in a spot in the back yard that you cant really see from the house.
So rather than put in some flowers, I thought it might be better to place herbs and small veg in them.
We disagreed about what planting mix to put in, so I told him.......ok you do one, I'll do the other and we shall see who's grows better.
So we got the plants yesterday. All the same ones. He wanted to add marigolds (which Im not so much a fan of but went along with it)
We planted a basil, a tomato, a cilantro, a sage..and he wanted a green bell pepper, I wanted a red. We split a six pack of the marigolds so three each.

My box gets a tad more sun than his, but I did my planter mix a bit different. I will be responsible for mine, and he for his.
We shall see who's grows better (hoping mine does.........)

Wish me luck!!

I love my garden and I am keen on raised beds they are so much easier to care for. I like to grow my own herbs but we have a lot of birds in the garden so protecting them can be a pain.

I am getting excited for planting, I only plant, strawberries, tomatoes, a few other things I will decide on later, our planting season doesn’t start until June 1st, so I have a while to decide. I hope your planter wins!

I would love a raised garden... that bending over is a pain on my back...lol This year, if I get around to it with the move, I'm doing all of my garden in tubs, planters and even kitten litter pails. I have a whole saw to cut into them so I can water the roots and not the plants.

If I'd had my total way, I probably would have done one with herbs, and one with flowers. But due to the location in the yard I didnt want to *waste* a pretty box of flowers where you couldnt enjoy them from the kitchen, too.

And if I was gonna plant any flowers, I would have filled the box up.

Good Luck!! Always wanted to invest in building a diy raised garden box. Since it's so many different looks for them and all really beautiful. And more beautiful once you start adding your plants to them. My mother wants a really nice one since she has knee problems. I was telling her about having one in her back yard so she can continue to enjoy planting. She's a green thumb grower.

I love those!! I wish I had one... or two... or more lol. Normally I have my seeds already started long before now but with everything going on, including the new move I was finally able to get out today and get them started!! I cannot wait to see them sprout and get things started.

I also have several different types of flower seeds but I'm not sure where I would want them and the fact that they are annuals means it's probably a little too late. I still have a rose bush to dig up at my other house and maybe some iris'.

So far not much is happening as far as growth. (I already grabbed a few basil leaves to use in a dish I made but I wont use any more until I get some growth)
I did notice some of the marigold flowers had died back, and so I pulled the heads off and grabbed the seeds and stuck them in the bare spots. lol.
I tell ya, its hard not to touch hubs stuff in there.
We did give them a drink on friday, tho not sure it really needed it.

silly hubby, he went out to look at the beds and so I did too.
He's like I should water mine it will need more water than yours.
(Im like, no. Mine will because its gettting a bit more sun that his, but oh well. Cant tell him anything)
When he did water his in short order the water started draining out the corners.

That tells me, it was already wet enough in there. I also gave mine a bit of a drink but I knew not to let the water run thru. I'd checked down and the dirt was damp lower down. Top was a bit dry so I did give it a drink. Very little water drained out of mine.
Its too early and has rained too much for them to have to be checked daily. We were gonna have a good bit of sun on sat and sunday so I gave them a drink just in case.
