I met my bf years ago,we lived together for a year 15 yrs ago.Yes he was convicted of murder. He shot and killed an ex girlfriend that came in his house while he was in bed with a butcher knife. Monroe county gave him a life sentence. He never denied doing it,he was in fear for his own life. I know him very well before this and while he is incarcerated he is not a violent person. He is not eligible for the 60 day credit for attending school because he is considered a VO!

Default Quite a few...

The term "violent offender" as such a well-defined label is actually new to me. I also didn't know that it had so many additional legal consequences attached to it.

I don't know whether or how that term translates over into the federal system. Both P (my brother) and R (my boyfriend) have conspiracy convictions. P's case had violence all over it, but I don't think that his actual conviction is labeled a violent offense. R's convictions are, I believe, considered violent in and of themselves, regardless of the conspiracy aspect.

As mentioned, P's case involved a lot of violence, and I've grown up with or around a number of the people who were a part of it. Out of everyone, three of them top my list as being particularly violent. One is now deceased; the other two are doing state bids for murder.

In fact, as I was writing this post, I got a call from yet another loved one who also did Fed time on a case with a lot of violence. *sigh* To be honest, I can't even keep count of the number of VOs who either have been or are still in my life.

Bryan is considered a violent offender, I suppose, because of pleading guilty to aggravated arson, otherwise a jury would have murdered him.
