Courts ponder the release of low-risk inmates in an effort to block the spread of COVID-19 to the prison system

State and federal courts in Connecticut have begun slowly releasing small numbers of prison and jail inmates vulnerable to complications from COVID-19, while defense lawyers try to accelerate the process to avoid what some fear is an approaching health crisis in the prison systems.

The state Department of Correction has reported that one employee, who works at the Garner Correctional Institution in Newtown, tested positive for the COVID-19 virus Monday. A judicial marshal who works in the state courts — often with prisoners — tested positive Tuesday.
