Default Is Beto Unit in TX going on lockdown?

My husband is at Beto and he is being told or is hearing they are going on their lock-down next week. Anyone else hearing similar from their LO there? I will miss our calls of course but lately he's been sending some beautifully written letters. So at least I'll have that. It is what it is.

My LO is at Coffield and he said they were on lockdown last weekend and I think they still are so it wouldn’t surprise me if Beto would too.

They tried going on lockdown this past week, but Huntsville called it off because Gurney had already started lockdown earlier that day and they often share staffing during lockdown. Gurney usually takes about a week, so Beto is expecting it early next week.......but, of course, that is not a definite and could easily change. You can always call the unit and ask. They won’t tell you plans, only status at that time.

Yea my husband said the same thing with exception that their rumor going around is that Beto will not lockdown until June. Which makes sense if the other unit just started theirs, plus the new warden etc. However as you know, every rumor started from someone that might know lol. I got calls as soon as they weren't racked up anymore. Que sera sera ..... thanks for info ...

Rumor is he was training his daughter to take over. That was back in March before my LO got transferred. It still says Norris on the website.

Did Beto ever have their lockdown for first half of the year? My significant other just got there. Is Beto still a "gladiator unit" with a lot of fights? How is the staff? Treatment of inmates?

Default Beto Unit LD

My fiance is in Beto, C-wing. Hadn't heard from him for 3 days so I
finally called today and found out the whole facility has been on lockdown. They weren't able to say how long it would last.

Wow, 30 days? My fiance said it would only be about 2 weeks, but he's only been at Beto since Christmas. And they do this twice a year, huh... smh.

When Jackson was there they did the annual lockdowns about halfway through april and right at 6 months later in mid to late october. I know, I was there. Its pretty common for a new Warden to have a lockdown, and TDCJ's website shows Keith Gorsuch as the new Senior Warden. I dont know how this guy does things, but when I was there it was right at about 30 days.

But heres the thing-well, atleast this was the case when I was there with Norris Jackson- not all wings are locked down for the full 30 days. The first thing they shake down is the trusty camp (after all they need them to go work in the kitchen in the building and the laundry, work the infirmary, hog barns and livestock etc). They will get shaken down and let up within 3 days usually.

Then they start shaking down the wings. Theyll start on ABCD and get the sign shop and kitchen workers up and going. Once those wings are up they should turn the phones back on. If you are on the northside - LMNP TU etc you are going to be waiting a while.

Also-with there being a new Warden, its very likely this guy might be taking his time to be extremely thorough now that Beto is "under his watch".

You're welcome. The northside is IJKL MNOP TUX. I dont know his situation- sentence, offense etc, but If I were him id try to get a job in say the sign shop or maintenance in order to move to the southside. Its more laid back over there. Depending on the offense, and if he's within 2 years of being eligible for parole he can try to put in to go to the trusty camp. I would not suggest trying it through the unit. Id write Mr. Armstrong at the state classification committee. Id talk about what skills I had- electrician, mechanical, livestock etc.

There was a time about a year ago when a family member could call him on Friday and have him look up your LO, and he would tell you right then if you he could send you, and you'd be on a bus within a couple of days. He became inundated with phone calls though and no longer does this anymore. Ive given people the advice to write (while I was there) and it worked.

Also, Palestine is a pretty decent parole region for most folks. Someone I know at Beto just made his first parole on a non-aggravated 30 year sentence (he's only done 3yrs on it). Granted its a program but he's probably not complaining.

This information may not apply to your fiancée but it might apply to someone's LO reading this.

Beto unit has been on lockdown for 9 days. How long do these usually last?

About a month usually, in my experience. But as I mentioned above, when I was there they would shake down the wings and once that block was done (ie- ABCD) (EFGH) (IJKL) they would let them up so they can work use the phone etc. When I was there they would start with the trusty camp the first week, and get to the south side (the first letters) by the end of the first week, start of the second week. The further you are from the letter A the longer you had to wait.

Again, theres a new warden and they might do things differently, but I doubt it.

Can they receive and send mail out while on lockdown?
