Default New NJ law to expunge some criminal records

Here's a link to a Newsworks article about the new law that allows some NJ felons to clear their criminal histories.

A new law taking effect Monday gives thousands of New Jersey residents the opportunity to clear their criminal records: "Most offenders who've completed a court-ordered drug rehabilitation program can now have their entire record of arrests or convictions expunged."

Expunging a criminal record in New Jersey is not difficult to accomplish. Assuming you qualify to expunge your record (see the links below), you can complete the entire process without having to hire an attorney. Legal Services of New Jersey (Legal Aid) has prepared an excellent document that details precisely how you can obtain an expungement. You can see that document at the following URL:

The New Jersey Courts have also prepared a document that details how you can expunge your criminal record. Please see:

The following link was prepared by a private attorney. It answers many frequently asked questions (FAQs) about expunging a criminal record in NJ. If you are considering expunging your record, I think the following link is worth a look:

I don't know about all counties, but many county courthouses have expungement packets (including the actual forms that you fill out) available for the general public. In Monmouth County, for example, if you go to the Criminal Case Manager's Office and ask for an expungement packet, they will give it to you for free. The men and women that work in the Monmouth County Criminal Case Manager's Office are actually quite helpful. They are the people in charge of handling all expungement petitions in that county so they have a lot of experience dealing with expungement-related issues.

Good luck!
