High/Medium Security - Single cells and dormitory housing

The GEO Group (Private prison contractors) offers academic and vocational education, program activities, and counseling services to the inmate population. Programs in adult basic education and General Equivalency Diploma curriculum, and vocational training are taught from 8:00 am to 9:30 pm each weekday. Substance Abuse Counselors work with individual inmates and groups using volunteer services from Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous to assist those men who wish to remain alcohol and drug-free upon release.

INDUSTRY PROGRAM: the 857 acres surrounding the prison complex are used for additional agri-business to augment the 46,000 sq. ft. furniture manufacturing and refinishing plant which is located within the prison compound.

The prison complex also includes a complete gymnasium and athletic field with recreational programming in individual and team sports. Each dormitory has a weight lifting pavilion, an outdoor basketball court, ample area for recreation, and a jogging area.

Program Notes (From Louisiana Doc Site Inmate Handbook)

ALC is managed by the Wackenhut Corrections Corporation. (Now The Geo Group)
ALC officers help maintain the secure ward at the Huey P. Long Regional
Medical Center in Pineville, where inmates are sent for scheduled
appointments with medical specialists.

ALC’s mental health department offers Commitment to Change, an eleven week
program that “acts like a mirror.” Inmates first learn to identify errors
in other people’s thinking and the consequences of those errors. Then,
inevitably, participants begin to apply their insights to themselves. The
program offers inmates believable models, persons whose life experiences
resemble their own, who are struggling toward change.

In addition to basic substance abuse education and prevention opportunities
for ALC inmates (including Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous
groups and 12-Step programs), ALC offers the “District Attorney’s Drug
Abuse Pre-Intervention Program” for first-time youthful offenders and the
“District Attorney’s Intervention Rap Session” for older offenders on the verge
of imprisonment. In both programs inmate peer trainers (who have
themselves been trained for their roles) relate what offenders can face in

ALC has developed an Incentive/Awards program to recognize inmates for
completion of certain course offerings and group activities, progressive
sobriety, and other significant accomplishments.

Other inmate programming includes anger management, sex offender
treatment, group therapy, Character Counts, and pre-release preparation.
