FAQ- RIDOC Mail

WHAT CAN INMATES RECEIVE VIA THE US MAIL?
Inmates are permitted uninterrupted correspondence and/or publications – letters, memos, greeting cards, paperback books, magazines, newspapers etc. - as long as the material poses no threat to safety and security, does not hinder rehabilitation and is not being used to further illegal activity.

WHAT TYPES OF PUBLICATIONS ARE PROHIBITED?
In general, mail that depicts, describes or encourages activities that may lead to the use of physical violence or group disruption or material that is sexually explicit. See the policy for the rest of prohibited publications.

WHEN IS MAIL DELIVERED TO INMATES?
Mail is delivered to inmates within 24 hours of receipt whenever possible, excluding weekends, holidays and emergencies.

IS INMATE MAIL READ BY CORRECTIONAL STAFF?
Yes. Outgoing and incoming non-privileged mail may be opened and inspected for contraband and read. Inmates are notified when incoming/outgoing mail is withheld in part or in full.

WHAT IS PRIVILEGED MAIL?
Privileged mail, as defined by policy, includes mail to and from government officials and legal correspondence.

WHAT HAPPENS TO MAIL DELIVERED AFTER AN INMATE IS RELEASED?
Mail that remains unclaimed after 1 year is opened. Items with no value are discarded. Valuable property is forwarded to the General Treasurer with the name of the owner and the date on which the property was first logged.

CAN INMATES SEND MAIL TO OTHER INMATES?
Only inmates who have immediate family members incarcerated may correspond or when inmates are involved in active legal proceedings together. Inmates wishing to correspond with other inmates should submit requests to the facility warden or designee.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I RECEIVE UNWANTED CORRESPONDENCE?
Contact the facility warden.

can you send a letter written in colored ink? what about a printed paper from online? can i make my bf a calendar and send it to him? is paint allowed ? it didnt say anything on the ri doc website when you click on the mail link you posed on here so i assumed it was okay?

Colored ink should be ok. I know print outs are fine, as are printed pictures.

I am not sure about paint. That might be pushing the limit a bit on things. If not, they'll just send it back generally. I know they cannot get mail from a PO Box in RI
