No call tonight, so I am assuming they are locked down. My husband calls every night unless lock down or out of minutes for the month. I checked the website and there wasnít anything posted in regards to canceled visits for tomorrow. If I hear or see anything I will let you all know ASAP.

Hi there - yes, people posting in this thread most likely do have loved ones at FCI Berlin People do not always respond to posts immediately and it may take a while before you get replies (I saw you were wondering in your other post/s about how to find people who are connected to FCI Berlin) - but this is indeed the place to read & post questions relating FCI Berlin

Anyone heard from their loved one yet? I last received an email on Thursday saying they were locking down and have not heard anything since then. TIA!

Yes, he should receive mail while he is in the SHU, but he might have trouble obtaining stamps & stationary to reply.

the closest hotels are in Gorham, nice I wouldn't say but their ok, 20-30 mins a way. I would suggest getting an Airbnb in berlin it will be closer and maybe nicer than the motels in Gorham

Default Been in the box a year and is losing it

My friend is in solitary in FCI Berlin. He's been in various prisons for about five years, and spent a lot of that time in solitary. Sometimes it was because he acted up, sometimes it seems like they just leave him in. He has been transferred across three prisons in the past year, and the last two, McKean and Berlin, just put him in the box as soon as he arrived. He has always handled it well in the past, though I could not understand how someone could be in solitary for a year without going crazy.

The trouble is that now he says he feels like he is going crazy. He told his mother that he doesn't think he can handle it anymore, and he has to get out of the box. She told me, and we are both afraid that he is going to hurt himself because he never sounded like this before despite three+ years in solitary out of the last five.

Question for all you folks with experience: how can we help him? I have contacted the public defenders he had but haven't heard back from them. I am going to try to reach the chaplain at FCI Berlin and ask him to go and visit. Is there anything else, any other route? Remember, he walked in the door at Berlin and they threw him in the box the same day. Any ideas?

It may be a continuation of his punishment from his previous prison. If he transferred from the SHU, he will be put into the SHU at his new prison.

Sorry, but I know of no way for you to help him that wouldn't result in even more trouble from the prison staff. Unfortunately the bop has even more aggressive ways to punish prisoners who anger them, (now) two supermax prisons and the Special Management Unit prisons, which are both SHU on steroids.

I hope someone will have more positive information. Some options include contacting the Dept. of Justice's Inspector General (https://oig.justice.gov/), a federal legislator, or the news media, but more times than not, it only increases the bop's retaliation.

FBOPNOMORE, thanks for your feedback and advice. It's really tough. I'm afraid they're going to break this poor young man down.
