Default Visiting Nightmare

@ KUDDLES: From what I know KVSP only takes the Matricula Consular and the Mexican passport for only 2 months. I actually just spoke to the visiting lt last week and she confirmed this for me. She also stated that after those 2 months are up you do need to be able to provide a US gov't issued id. Her name is Lt. Denning and her extension is 5712.

Now ladies, I also have an isse at hand. I' not sure how many people went to visit anyone on A yard this past weekend (2/5-2/6), but I'm sure I speak for many when I say that A yard visiting was a complete and absolute nightmare. I, along with many others, arrived at KVSP yesterday 2/6 at about 9:30am or so. I understand that they had be on LD for about 6 months so visiting would be a little hectic, but that doesn't even begin to describe this horrific experience. Not only that, but as most of us know, the CO's do little to help the situation. Some of us "lucky" ones were let all the way back into the visiting lobby area (inside the actual visiting building) only to give us hopes of still having at least a short visit. We waited there for about an hour only to be told at 1:55pm that we would NOT be able to visit!! One of the visiting officers said he had fliped the visiting room twice already and there was nothing he could do at that point. There were only about maybe 7 families waitinig for their visit so it completely shocks me that they couldn't do anything to let only 7 more inmates get at least a 15 minute visit. This officer also said he had been terminating visits to accomodate all others. There were quite a few people that left during the hour we stood there waiting for nothing. The problem is that not very many people were let into the visiting room after that!! There seemed to be lots of empty tables and from what I saw, they were not doubling up the inmates (2 inmates to a table). Presonally, if they knew visitng would be so hectic they should have advised people that in order to accomodate as many people as possible vists would only be an hour or two tops! I'm sure most people wouldn't have minded at all. So once our hopes were crushed and stepped on at 1:55pm, all the officer said is that all we could do was talk to the visiting Sgt. Many of us stayed behind to speak to her and what puzzles me the most is how she was just stting (or possibly standing) in her office chatting away with other CO's knowing well enough she had about 5 families waiting to speak to her. Her attitude and her actions only confirm to me that the most of the officers at KVSP just don't care!! Not only that but she let one of the smart ass CO's (K. Wade) try to belittle me. As the sgt. she should've not allowed him partake in the converstaion since he was only there for about a minute of the incident. I was trying to be very civil and explain to her why it was unfair that they put us through about 5 hours of just waiting for nothing, and all she said was "well maybe you just need to leave earlier to get here earlier." I already leave about 6am from my home so I guess now I will have to leave at 3am just to make sure to at least get a visit! I proceeded to ask her for the warden's number and all she did was give me the number to prison and extension 0 to ask for the warden's secretary. I, and the rest of the famiies, were put through this humiliation only to be a given a number we already have! Not only that, but I also made a comment about how expensive the water is there and the fact that the water from the fountains is not drinkable either and one of the CO's said "Well then I guess you've never been to Disneyland or places where you have to pay the same price for water?" That completely blew my mind! Does she really think we feel like we're at Disneyland when we go visit our loved ones in prison where the CO's are, to say the least, not the friendliest people? I just couldn't believe she said that. Then Wade, who as I mentioned had nothing to do with the situation since he showed up towards the end of this discussion, decides to just butt in and start arguing with me. Officer K. Wade, not knowing really what was going on, stated: "Well if you don't like it you can just leave!" To that I responded that that was exactly what I was going to do AFTER I was given the information I asked for, and he went on to say that I should and that he would presonally escort me out of the facility. Perhaps I should of just kept my mouth shut, but I went on to tell him that it was really nice of him to escort me all the way out and that I would really appreciate it and gave him a big smile. This probably pissed him off so bad because he was just staring me down. Thankfully I didn't snap at him, but it's competely beyond me why they treat visitors that way? I really want to file a complaint about the whole visiting situation yesterday, but because of fear of retaliation against my husband or myself, I am a little hesitant. What should I do? I feel so humiliated and offended and I really want something to be done. Someone needs to be held responsible for this lack of care and organization What should I do? Please help!

I was a fortunate one to get in at a reasonable time, but I did notice alot of people in my yard were not coming in till 1pm, which was crazy. I come from prisons that you do need to camp out to get a good number to visit and 400 was not a big deal for these prisons to process us and get us all in by 11am.

First, I believe the officers where new which was a slow in the process... Which made no sense since they knew they were going to have a crazy visit day since A yard came up. So this was lack of preparation on the SGT. behalf and it does show her incompetence at her job.

ALL can complain to the obdumsman (spelling?) officer. This is just an email of how things were done this past weekend. You don't have to give your name nor your husbands name but most of all its in the numbers. So we all need to write a small note in expressing our concern with this.

Also, this is why I feel we desperately need an IFC member on every yard. You meed 1 a month with the Warden or AW and the visiting SGT or LT and discuss concerns and all that you wrote would be perfect topics to tackle.

The warden will only know what the cos tell him or show him, its our job to do the same. I am very sorry for all the visitors that had to go through this.

Thank you traviesita for your feedback! I really do appreciate it so very much! I completely agree with you, we need to get the IFC organized @ KVSP as soon as possible. If there is anything at all I can do to speed up the process please let me know and I will be on it ASAP. I actually did go online @ the CDCR website and found the number for the KVSP ombudsman. The person's name is Jean Weiss and the phone number is (916)324-5458. Do you think it's better to contact this person or just the main number for CDCR Ombudsman (916) 445-1773? What do you think would have the most impact? I am really concerned that these CO's think they can mistreat the visitors the way they did this past weekend and just get away with it. The visiting sgt and her fellow CO's even told me that even if I contacted the CDCR things were not going to change at KVSP. This really worries me since it seems to me they feel they run that show and what we say doesn't matter! I guess what they don't realize is that there is power in numbers! We all work very hard for our money and put time aside to visit the people we love only to be left waiting for so many hours and still get nothing! If our tax payer dollars are paying for these institutions the least they can do is be nice, don't you think? I completely understand when something like a yard going down happens say the morning of visit due to a riot or some sort of altercation, but to leave us waiting for hours only to be told at 1:55pm that we will not get our visit when we are already in the visiting room lobby is just ridiculous! We are people just like them and do not deserve to be treated as anything less than human. Sorry to ramble on, but I am very irrate about this whole thing! i just wish I could do more.

I would say write her an email. Paper leaves a trail, a conversation is not recorded... here is her email to any one that would want to complain on what happen this weekend... Jean.Weiss@cdcr.ca.gov

If we don't get nothing done or you ever feel your not satisfied with what was told to you by her she has a boss which is sara malone and below is her email addy.
Sara.Malone@cdcr.ca.gov

Kvsp can say nothing will change till their face is blue, but to me this sounds like another way to intimidate the families or discourage them in complaining. Jean Weiss is there to listen to visiting problems if we cant get no where with these hard headed people. And lets remember were not asking for nothing we don't got coming.

I don't visit A yard but my visit was also impacted yesterday. I arrived at 8am and was # 325. I noticed that the guards were not the regulars so hopefully this was the cause of the lack of organization. They need to figure it out by next weekend so the visiting process runs more smoothly! =) Sorry to hear you went thru all that and didn't get a visit! I myself only got a 45 minute visit! =(

Yes! Each yard has a gym so if it's A gym it's on A yard. Take care!

Your ear piercings should be fine... But your lip one they will make you remove it.

Also, lately the medal detector has been really sensitive...

I was wondering what I could wear to visiting, because by the sound of things, I dont have much that I can wear. What so my children (4 & 1) wear? Can my son bring in his sippy cup? He's a blanket baby, will he be allowed to bring his blanket?

wear all blak lol its the easiest i think.. no wire bra.. no low cut, spaghetti strap, nothing sheer, umm u gotta wear a bra lol sports ones are the best..no jeans, no colors that the inmate and co's would wear.. ur kids? idk.. i dont have any so i dont really know... umm lemme see what else.. nothing too "tight".. if u wear a skirt or dress it has to be NO MORE than 3 inches above the knee right?...

i wear all blak and i bought a old navy track suit thingy or w/e its called and i was fine.. i did my m/u and my hair tho.. hell its something..

your one year old should be fine with a sippy cup. As long as they can see through it. As for the blanky, thats fine for your 1 year old. And your 1 year old can wear ANYTHING. There is a limit in height I believe its 36 inches or 33 don't remember that who ever is below that height doesn't have to adhere to their rules.

You can wear jeans they just can't be blue denim. I've worn black and gray. Also the dress/skirt rule is 2 inches not 3 inches. The last time I was there I heard the CO tell someone if the children are as tall as the table or counter they have to follow normal dress code!!Just stay away from anything too tight or low cut and you should be ok. No orange, green bottoms, beige tops, all blue and white shirts can be iffy thats all I can think of right now. Good luck!!

Ok, my son can wear whatever, he is almost 2, but short. He isn't as tall a a table yet. My daughter has black & gray jeans, so she should be ok. Now the shirt that matches the gray jeans are yellow, white, and gray, that should be fine right?

That should be fine. Take extra clothes just in case. It really just depends on who is processing you in. Good luck and enjoy your visit!
