Hi I am currently living in the UK and I know that I have to send mail through usps, I was wondering if an inmate would be able to write me back a letter even though I live in the UK? I'm guessing not, but asking just in case.
Usually they can send their letters via reglular snail mail but it costs them more, last time I checked it was at least $1.50 but it might have increased. So that's a lot of money for an inmate unless they have enough funds in their commissary accounts.

Postage rates for a one ounce letter from the US to the UK cost $1.20 US in US stamps. Some prison commissaries only sell regular domestic first class "forever" stamps. If that's all that he can buy, 3 domestic forever stamps will also work on a one ounce letter addressed to the UK.

I've corresponded with prisoners in the US for almost 20 years and I am used to seeing the 3 "forever" stamps on the envelopes!! The guys have never complained about the cost of writing to me... so I don't think it will be any problem for you. Go for it!!

I would recommend you jmail.cc it's cheaper on your and as well cheaper for the prisoners. Half Europe is back on "lockdown" again the mail service isn't working normal (less flights etc..) ! A person in TX sent out a card in July and I received it in November (Austria)....that is just one example.... ! So I got a mailbox on Jmail.cc and thats the best option for myself and my friend behind bars since the pandemic started. :-) !

Agree - I use Corrlinks (federal), but still the "snail mail" is good too - have something in the hand to read over again, send photos, etc... I do both. Hopefully the pandemic won't be too much longer and mail will return to more normal.

Hand written letters are my preferred choice and they can write back internationally, however, some might not be able to write as much due to it's cost, which keeps increasing for us with the blink of an eye.
With the uncertainty of these days, I am grateful most prisons allow a form of online messaging through an approved vendors. If you would like to consider sending an electronic message, these two options are available in Florida Prisons and any Federal Prisons.
In Florida, the Dept. of Corrections approved the use of Jpay to allow online messaging at a cost of .39 cents per stamp/message and it's two way, so they can respond back to you. Feel free to visit jpay.com and at the top select Facility search and you can learn what options they offer at each specific facility.
On the other hand, if it's a Federal prison, just like carm2045 mentioned they use Corrlinks for messages, you will need to send your pen pal your email address to add you to the list and you will receive an email with an Identification Code to register and begin communicating so much faster.
Warm regards,
Gallega

Yes, usually the inmate can write. Depending on the DOC, it can take from 3 - 7 days prior to Covid for mail to the UK. However, if the Centre does have access to Jpay as was mentioned in a previous response, it is easier and quicker. If there is no attachment to the email, the mail can be delivered quite quickly! However, do remember the rules and regulations differs with each jail/prison in the US. It may help to visit the website of the Jail/prison.
I'm in UK. I've had letters that have been paid for by the inmate but also some marked indigient.(?) Don't know if all doc do this. I've also used jpay and corrlinks.
