VA resident in a NC prison ( fed crime)

how it is that a VA resident is assigned to a NC private prison... isn't that illegal or because a fed crime they can put u where there want to.. please help me understand if you can. thanks.

Since the conviction was in federal court, the bop can assign him to any one of their prisons, or even to one of the privately owned prisons where they rent cells for their inmates. The current law states that the bop must attempt to place prisoners within 500 miles of their homes, but since there are no penalties when they don't, they don't try very hard. I was never closer than 1300 miles from home even though there were countless other options available that would have complied with the law..
