Default What does "caught a case" mean?

I see this term used here from time to time.

It seems to mean that someone got arrested and jailed for doing something wrong, but it also sounds like it means that the person was unjustly arrested and convicted ie like "I was walking down the street and caught a cold" (I was not responsible for what happened).

Thanks

It's what people say when they don't want to admit they are guilty

It has nothing to do with guilt. It just means they are being charged with something new.

When someone comments that they "caught a case", they are saying they are being charged with some type of crime.

Peace~

you must remember, lots of people are just in the charging phase. They haven't been convicted. The last thing they need is to admit to charges on a publicly viewed forum.

You also must remember, most State's attorneys charge high - meaning they charge with the toughest crime they can, regardless of the facts or circumstances. So, if you're charged with murder, saying, "I murdered somebody" is really dishonest - it could be self defense, it could be manslaughter, it could be a lot of things other than what was charged. The crucible of trial is supposed to produce the truth, not the charging document.

Further, there's a fair percentage of people locked in prison for "catching a case" when they did absolutely nothing wrong to begin with. DNA has cleared how many people from death row? And that's just death row cases where there's DNA involved. If innocents can wind up on death row, how many are doing time for arson or burglary?

So, yeah, if you're thinking everybody is and should be culpable for their charges, you're going to take umbrage with "catch a case". It's shorthand for a lot of things, and has nothing to do with whether or not somebody who's actually guilty of a crime feels responsible or feels remorse.

9 out of 10 don't "catch" a case for nothing. They've "caught" something because they did something.

I don't understand how it matters at all if someone does, or does not deny that they are guilty of a new crime they are being charged with. That's why everyone is guaranteed the right to a trial by jury by the Constitution.

Throughout history (including in the Bible) there have been many societies where the word of an individual meant you were automatically guilty. Even though our justice system heavily favors the government over the individual, at least everyone has their day in court. That right becomes much more meaningful when it is you, or a loved one, who "catches the case". Believe me that nobody is exempt from that happening.
