Default Intro--LAT from Oklahoma

Hi, I joined PTO almost a year ago, and a lot of people know me, but for those who don't, I'd like to introduce myself.

About 3 years my world fell apart. My son, who had just graduated from college and moved to Texas was arrested. He had met a girl who claimed to be a college student in the college city where he had moved. They had a brief affair and then he found out her true age. Not realizing that it was illegal, but suffering from tremendous guilt, he called it off. 2 weeks later he was arrested.

We were dumb and naive. We hired a lawyer and took everything he said as gospel, because we sure as heck didn't know what to do. At first he was sure that my son would get probation, but as the months wore on the parents insisted on prison time. He has served 2 1/2 years and has 1 1/2 to go.

He has matured into a very wonderful young man. He knows that he will have challenges for the rest of his life because he was weak in a moment of passion, but he is determined to live the best life that he could have.

I wish that this didn't happen, but since it happened, I am thrilled that he is making the most of his time through interspection, and becoming a more spiritual person.

This summer he wrote me a letter that said, Mom, I am happy and at peace." This is all I could hope for him.

Someday this part of the nightmare will be over and he will start the next journey as a registered sex offender in a world gone nuts.

One of my closest friends had a nephew with the exact same story. It just burns me that they clog the system with people like your son, so much for justice.

Hope to talk to you soon Lisa!

I have great compassion for you as I too am a Mother of a prisoner (in Ohio) My son killed a man who came into his home to rape him and whne that went sour he was goin to kill my son. In OHio we do not have a defendable self defense law. If it is daylight you are to go out a window-it would be funny if not so sad- we have so many people in prison that were just defending themselves. Ohios biggest income producer is the prison system. My son was of what we call the old law (anyone convicted prior to 1994 (he was sentenced in 1993) and received 15 to life. Mark has been in 13 years with one parole hearing flopping him for 10 more two years ago. My immediate family does all we can and I have gone to what we call the mat at one time to get my son moved from a very dangerous private run prison. I was successful but I have great respect for anyone that has to battle Ohio prison system, I have been there. In Ohio we have several law suites against the system and the system continues to loose. We recently had a set back in OHio on the Sirek case, but God will win out on appeal. Evil can only grow in darkness and will fadein light. My prayer is we will all shine a bright light on the corruption and slave labor that exits in many of our prisons, and let our politicans know we are not the silent minority but the vocl majority that votes.
Many men are in prison for "SEXUAL OFFENDER" that have made similar mistakes as your son and it infuriates me that the system is looking to put people in jail and will not look at the truth. I worry that the people that are using the sytem to get even will make it so that ond day women and men who are actually attacked will not be believed
Hugs

Thanks so much for sharing. It really is a darn shame that your son fell victim to a twisted little girl's pay back. Do you mind me asking how old she was?

Sounds similiar to what happened to someone here in Tx, a prior neighbor. His son has served the time, and Tx won't release him.

I am a TDCJ mother of a wrongly convicted son. I feel your pain, as well as a host of other emotions as do you I am certain. It is wonderful that your son has found peace and is using the time for self improvement. So is my son. It is truly amazing that good can be found thru something so awful as what we all endure.

Let me know if I can help you in any way. Glad you are here, thank you for sharing your life changing event.
