Default Changing my number for cheaper calls...

Is it true that if I change my number to a local number to where he's at, our calls will be cheaper?

Local calls from the prison cost the inmate 6 cents/min, all others cost 21 cents/min (reduced from 24 cents/min by the FCC a couple of years ago, and they are about to be reduced even more in early 2016).

The bop forbids "call forwarding" and punishes violations severely. Google voice and some other options are definitely "call forwarding".

Apparently the bop has approved some of the "cheap calls" services, and having a cellphone number changed to a number that is local to a prison (area code and prefix) is not "call forwarding". Be careful that anything you decide to do is approved by the bop.

I was just gonna through my carrier and get my number changed so I'm sure that wouldn't count as call forwarding. I'm much too suspicious of these other arrangements people have like Google Voice and stuff. Idk how that stuff works so I'm gonna stay away from that. Thanks for the info!!

I tried to do that but in my case the first three digits after the area code needed to be local to the prison as well and my cellphone provider wasn't able to get those three digits right, seemed like the services who offer the virtual local numbers have obtained all the available local numbers so they can offer them with their services, such as prison connect and telepigeon. Nevertheless, I hope you get a local number and can enjoy cheaper calls

Yes definitely
I just found out about this service that provides you with a local number that it transfers to your cell phone so the jail is forced to charge you the local rate
jailjack
jailcallsusa
prisonerconnect

is just some of the sites that can help you.
But make sure your not already local or youll just be paying the same rate

I don't believe those services are options...as fbopnomore stated:

If the services you listed "transfers" calls to your cell, that IS call-forwarding and NOT allowed.

Does anyone know the list of services that are valid (and approved) services for BOP?

If the FCC's changes are implemented in early 2016, long distance calls will drop from 21 cents/min to 11 cents, so I hope it actually happens (in spite of Securus' objections).
