Yes, you can send decent looking pictures, paperback books, single newspaper article, cards (NO envelopes--though), and of course letters! hope this helps.

Hi everyone, my brother-in-law was sent to Fort Dix in Nov. We are so lost in this new life it is unbelievable. Can anyone tell me anything about the inmate spending? Is there a way we can see what he spends the money we send him on? Also restitution...is this a monthly payment the family makes. Ugh so confused...please help!
Thanks in advanced!

my bf has been there since august of '08. I havent seen him this entire time bc i am on the west coast. its really hard. I do like that he can call me all the time and send me pictures. Its not like what i've heard state is like, its easier for me to send him things. He tells me you pretty much get to do what you want and hes been going to school in there, he just got his personal trainer cert. Now we are waiting for the approval for his halfway house here in las vegas so we can be together. I want to go visit him but he gets out inapril and its been this long, so what is another 3 months.

A couple of questions for starters. I located this address to send money orders to put money on his books. Is this correct?
  • Federal Bureau of Prisons
    Insert Valid Committed Inmate Name
Insert Inmate Eight Digit Register Number
    Post Office Box 474701
    Des Moines, Iowa 50947-0001
  • Also - the web site said something about sending parcels. Will I be able to send him packages? If so, what kind of stuff will I be able to send him?
  • Thanks for any help.
you can send magazines to the po box 2000. i don't put it in a box though. you can send pictures and cards that don'thave glue or glitter on them. they can't get porn lol or naked pictures. if you want to mail books you have to go through a website like amazon or barnes and noble. they can get cds too but it also has to be ordered through a site and sent directly to the po box from the website. you send money also through quick collect through western union. they can use it for the commissary and to buy phone minutes to call. it takes a month to get a number approved for calling though. my man gets his mail within a week usually it doesn't take more than 2 weeks. if they don't call for a while and they ususally do then it means hes in the hole more than likely or he ran out of minutes. they get bought minutes and a certain alotted amount every month from the prison i think its only 300 min. a month. hope that helps

I actually got/missed my first call on Thursday - while I was at bowling! So, a little over a week before he could call me - not too bad. On Friday I got a phone account set up through V-Connect and sent his Christmas money by Western Union. We talked 3 times on Saturday (slept with the phone next to me all Friday night so I didn't miss a call ) and three times again on Sunday. He talked to his mom twice on Sunday too. Good to know he's doing OK. Haha - good thing the month is almost over since he'll be out of minutes in another week at this rate.

Thanks to all for the info. He was impressed at how much I had figured out from reading at PTO.

Question a heads up

L. told me last week not to be surprised if I don't get a phone call from him for a while. He said phones may be restricted because there's been some trouble with people having cell phones. Just thought I'd pass that along in case anyone is missing calls.

How do they get cell phones in there anyway?

Yeah, my husband called and stated the same thing. My first visit is this weekend, and they might lose them.

L. said the same thing about visits but our visits will be few and far between since I'm in Cleveland.

What happens if you make your scheduled visit, get there and they've lost visitation privileges? Can they do that?

Hope you have a wonderful trip/visit!

Default Surrendering tomorrow

I am surrendering at Ft. Dix camp tomorrow. Any recent status on conditions or what to expect. No phone calls for everyone? I guess I would be included in that? Any insight would be helpful as I am extremely anxious to say the least.

I just got a call from my husband this morning and he didn't mention anything about any phone of visit restrictions. I was supposed to go and see him today but didn't have the extra gas money but when I talked to him yesterday he didn't mention that I couldn't visit.

Yes; they can ask/rather tell you to leave the premises or suffer (you and your love one) further consequences. If it is an extreme distance, you may want to ask to speak to the officer in charge for the day/supervisor for further clarification or help!!! You never know unless you ask. But it is better to hear from your love one than take a chance. Hope this helps!

My son called today. He hasn't had a problem making calls. I heard they had a cell phone problem.

I have read articles stating the BOP is having this problem in alot of their facilities. They use them to find out info on other inmates (if they snitched) and for other reasons.

This is a major infraction and not worth getting more time and transfered to a higher security prison (imo)

I went to se my husband over the weekend, he stated that they cant take weekend visits away. I agree why the hell woukd you take the chance to do more time. I also was told they are shipping alot of people out. It really sucks for the people who just want to get home to their family. Its hard when you live in Ohio and their in New Jersey and costly to.

Unhappy just got letter

Yeah - I just got a letter from L. He's in one of the buildings that's in total lockdown. Last time I talked to him he assured me that he's not involved in the whole cell phone thing. I laughed and said I was sure he wasn't since I can tell by my phone bills.

Sadly, I had to let him know that one of his best friends - and golf partner - passed away last week. I called the prison and they said he would be notified on Sunday. Didn't get to talk to him though. Today I sent by overnight mail a letter/packet with as much stuff from the online obituaries/condolences from family and friends/pictures as I could print out before my ink cartridges ran out. Best I could do under the circumstances.

The buildings that have been on lockdown were locked because of contraband...specifically,cell phones. They get them either by COs smuggling them in for $$, or by someone from the camp tossing them over the fence. Here lately cell phones have been a huge problem and as they've found them, they've taken away things, microwaves, commissary, etc, even filled in the electric outlets to prevent inmates from using chargers....so, in turn, the inmates in the affected units have pulled dumb stunts like pulling the fire alarms and generally making trouble...nothing violent, but enough to escalate a battle they can't win. It's a pissing contest.
Why the cell phones? I asked the same thing, why would anybody take such a risk and screw things up not just for themselves, but for everybody else, too, over something so dumb? I was thinking the cell phones were just for talking, you see.
But they use them for more than that, they use them to gain internet access,to download stuff....somehow, they've become associated with knowledge and power. I don't think those of us who have the freedom to ...well, do what I'm doing right now, for instance, can understand how isolated and cut off they feel inside.
I'm NOT making excuses, mind you. My own son doesn't have and doesn't want a cell phone, and I pray no one in his room gets one, because they all get punished when cell phones are found. It's beyond stupid and has made it a little tense there in the past few weeks.
But things seemed a little bit easier today when I was there. Let's hope this has passed and everything settles down.

Default Ps

I just found out over 150 men were shipped out to higher security facilities. If you are already in a camp or low, why do something that will send you to high security. Some things you know what the result will be, other infractions aren't as clear cut. (imo)

Now they have to earn the right to go back to camp or low. This can take time. My son was sent to low from the camp a year ago. It took him a year to earn the right to go back to camp. This was for a small infraction.
He is waiting to see where he is going. It want be Fort Dix. He has been in both, which means he is too familiar with the in and outside of the premises.

No telling how long it will take for a cell phone or drug infraction. They most likely will have more time added. People claim women love to talk. Looks like men do too. Of course, we already knew this .

They also didn't think about how this will hurt their love ones. I was very disappointed when my son went from camp to low over something silly. He appealed, but lost. Do they ever win.

My heart goes out to them. Am not in their shoes, so who am I to judge their motives. All I can do is pray for them
