Default Need pot roast recipe for slow cooker

Needing a pot roast recipe for the slow cooker. He can get food one the weekends at the halfway house so he wants a roast. He asked for it with carrots and potatoes. I don't normally make it that way and he didn't want it the way I make it.

I don't use an exact recipe, but I think searing the roast on all sides is essential. I also brown the onions (I'd brown the carrots too if I used them), use beef broth and red wine.

Not to sound silly but can I use wine in the recipe since it's alcohol?

You don't have to use wine at all - just use more liquid of another sort. Some people use water, but I don't. Beer or ale works well too.

It isn't the alcohol, that evaporates out, it is the taste and a deep red wine has a heartier taste than white.

The last one I made I added browned mushrooms too and that was really good although a few friends were not happy about that.

I love mushrooms!!! We've always made ours with bigger chunks of everything. That way people can take out what they don't like.

If you don't want to take the chance on wine or beer for the liquid, you can use beef base, or add some water and Worcestershire sauce, or Pick-a-Peppa sauce, and so on. Deepens the flavor without the alcohol.

I use no canned soups in anything.

Look at Martha Stewart's and The Pioneer Woman's recipes to get some good ideas.

In the 17 years we've known each other it's only recently that he's been able to eat my cooking. Everything he's asked for is stuff I don't normally cook so I get nervous.

Also, I suggest extra veggies especially since he hasn't had any semi-fresh ones in prison.

My last pot roast I used 5 huge onions and it was only for me. And the mushrooms - I cook the potatoes as I need them.

I add diced potatoes the last hour or two. They don't need as mich time to cook and absorb left over liquid.

I also add a few bay leaves, carrots, onions, and celery.

I was also going to add that fresh fruits and veggies are a commodity hardly seen. He would love anything you make at home I'm sure

I know I am late to the party but here is a foolproof recipe for roast.... 3lb rump roast, 1 envelope Ranch dressing mix, 1 envelope Italian dressing mix, 2 envelopes McCormick Brown Gravy mix, and 2 cups of water....cook on low for 8 hours.

I was going to suggest the packaged Onion soup mix

Pretty sure you can add whatever liquid you like.
Wine or beer do add alot to the flavor (and no alcohol is present as it cooks off)
Def add the potatoes later
Or you could do rice on the side......
